The devil made me do it! Actually, I have a hard time passing up a bargain. I know you are carrying his guitars and started doing some research on him. As an x pro flamenco player he really knows what they are supposed to sound like.

A while back I ran across an EBay auction for a brand new 120 negra. This is the one you sell for $2,000 (and your competition sells for more, BTW). I don't think many people knew much about him and I picked it for peanuts. With shipping and duty I will be just a hair over a grand.

The problem is, with the Green and DeVoe you don't want to take them anywhere and you worry about them. What I needed was a nice dinger to pack around. I figured at a grand I would come out fine. If I didn't like it, I can sell it for what I have in it. So far it looks like a great find.

Bob,

I probably can't add much to what you already know. If you have one of his flamencos you probably have as much info as I do. The only thing that would be of concern is his flamenco background. He may not be the best guy to build a classical, but what do I know.

About the one I just got. The 120 negra is his lower cost model, which is supposedly build primarily by his assistants, with him doing the important stuff. The workmanship is in line for this price guitar. It has a few minor finish issues, but all and all very nice. The action was set pretty good, but I took it down a hair already. The tuners were cheap throwaways. I put a set of Gotah's on that I had setting around.

As soon as I pulled it out of the case and tuned it up, I could tell it had real possibilities. As far as I am concerned most negra’s sound like classicals with tap plates on them. This one is flamenco all the way. It is new so I think it will just get better.

All I can say is, if his low-end guitar is this good; his top of the line must be outstanding.

You got that right. If you like this one you'd really like his 1a models. These he builds himself. He told me he was no longer going to be making the 120. I believe the only 120's available are what's left in various shops. The 150 will now be the base model. Also a very nice guitar.

Hey Pat,

Where exactly is Beaverton? My wife has been offered a job there. Of course her company will not pay for the move but the thought of living in OR. intriques me. I love the rocky coasts.

Hi Tom. Beaverton is on the west side of town, 15 mins from downtown Portland,
and not much more than an hour from the ocean.

Hi Rich,

I am very tempted to just push for the move. I love the great outdoors and the fresh ocean air. I think it would be a nice change from Texas. I won't miss the brutal Texas summer heat one bit!

That was my understanding as well. The one I got was 2005 from a European dealer that was closing it out. I think the 120 and 150 are so close it didn't make sense for him to make both.

As Richard said, Beaverton is the one of the main bedroom communities of Portland. My office is just a few minutes away. Trust me, once you visit the area, you won't go back. You have to get used to rain in the winters, but the the summers are heaven on earth.

Tom, you have a little bit of of everything here, really nice summers,
not too hot or muggy, not too cold in the winter, or much snow, but if
you like snow it's only an hour away to the mountains where there's
a ton of it just now, so you have somthing of everything here,an hour
to the mountains, an hr to the ocean, the great outdoors right on your
doorstep, not to mention a flamenco dance school in town, what
more could you want, come and check it out.

you talking about Rafael Romero from San Fernando? I visited him last year and bought a nice blanca and spent a very nice evening there where he played my new guitar in a concurso de cante Flamenco...different story.

Anyhow the guitar is nice, i think its a 1b and it cost 1.800 euros. He has a 1a model and a few pro ones , rather confusing. apart from that he produces a model exclusively for a german shop (model andalucia) which is the 1a model quality wise, but without the looks, a bit more simple. Extremely cheaper tho. They sell his whole product line. Check this: http://www.ole-flamenco.com/

However...i am not aware that he builds classical guitars at all.

Listen guys, because someone knows a lot about flamenco does not mean he/she is not capable of building nice classicals. The fact that the guy knows how to play and do it well, gives him an advantage over about all other guitarmakers.....

You got it man! Be here by May. The smallmouth bass will be on fire. Two guys will usually average about a hundred fish a day, plus you get to go over 70 miles per hour on water! Guitars and fast boats; it doesn’t get any better!
