Ruphus -> In Jesus´rear (Dec. 10 2017 7:39:55)

Today´s news report on a finding in the rear of a Jesus figure of a church in Sotillo de la Ribera, Burgos in Spain. The figure was about falling off from its cross, and a crack had opened at the butt, thus taken down for restoration. The restaurateurs found a secret chamber in which the priest of its time (Joaquín Mínguez) had hidden info (on social life, economics, and epidemics) about his municipality in the year 1777. Apparently for future generations. Looking at the pics, there came some speculative thoughts, about which I would like to see what our wood worms may be saying. Thoughts: The figure, unlike occasional others, specially from rural areas, seems to be made by quite a talented sculpturer. As the priest mentions his name, I suppose the two to possibly have had relations too / the priest may have ordered the chamber. Remarkable to me how well the chamber was carved out. Evenly like with today´s power tools. Also the sawing of the "lid", eventhough not absolutely straight was done rather well. However, different measures of shrinkage in the main body versus the smaller mass of the lid may have led to unevenness between rim and lid over time. Thus insertion of thin wedge. Further, as the priest might have been wanting access several times, there seem to exist traces of prizing open through paint and spatula at the dorsal section of the rim. The maker of the figure might have been accompanying the priest´s access, seeing how both surfacing and later paint job appear to not be lacking behind the original job. What thinks you? -
