his prescribed method of working on one finger at a time though. Any thoughts on that?

His exercise is to plant IMA on the GB and E strings then play one string at a time chromatically up and down the neck thereby working on each finger individually.
sorry, can't remember, it was a while ago.... try it out and see if you can get some benefit from it maybe?

Life is short and time is precious (I have a day job). I find a lot of exercises repetitive and boring. And some of these "Studies" type things I can't be bothered to learn, and when I do I tend to get bored of anyway. I want to play music! But I'm also painfully aware of my limitations musically and technically, and need to warm up and work daily on extending those limitations.

My solution at the moment (and since the last few years) is to have a set of warm up/ technique practise exercises that are all fairly short, which cover all the basic techniques and work on specific things I find difficult or problematic. They are based around tonal scales, arpegios and chords all in one key, which for me is just musical enough, easy to remember, and to keep it interesting I transpose the whole set around the keys.

For arpegios I just use pima, pami, pimami and p/amimam and a simple chord progression.

After going through my little warm up/technique practise I'm ready to practise/work on/play music.
