Morante -> RE: Cante de Cádiz (Oct. 14 2017 13:50:48)

Hola David This juerga was a little bit before my time, though I got to know all the participants. (One of them is José Fernandez, father of La May, probably the best cantaora de Cádiz). José Millán taught me how to accompany: he took me to all the bodas, communions etc. del Barrio de Santa María, because he was always invited. So I spent 2 years accompanying him in many memorable juergas. The one I will never forget was when he was diagnosed with an embolismo in the brain and needed an urgent operation. The day before, I invited him to eat in a family bar/restaurant in Calle Sagasta. After the meal I took out my guitar and José began to sing: he seemed inspired, as if he had a premonition. He sang for hours and the people trying to see through the windows blocked the street. The bar was overflowing and people began to send us tapas de jamón and chupitos of whiskey. Eventually, José tired and we all went home. The next day the operation went wrong and left him half paralyzed. He only survived 6 months. I stored my flamenco guitar in the wardrobe and stopped playing flamenco.
