spain -> recommendation (Aug. 29 2017 19:39:41)

hi, pls would be glad if you could recommend me some good music. im new in flamenco, and looking for something similar to estrella morente. her tangos del cerro, bulerias de los muelles, is kind of what im looking for. she is beautiful and like female singers. [:)]. so thanks for some tips.

Leñador -> RE: recommendation (Aug. 29 2017 19:43:06)

Rocio Marquez, some of her newer stuff I don't love but when she does real flamenco it's on point. Her YouTube videos are better than any albums.

Dudnote -> RE: recommendation (Aug. 29 2017 21:34:58)

La Niña de los Peines
La Paquera de Jerez
Fernanda de Utrera
Aurora Vargas
The Montoya family
Ines Bacan
Carmen Linares
Dolores Agujetas

And if you like Estrella you may like to check out Montse Cortes.

This isn't what you asked for, but if ever you're interested in Estrella's entorno, you could try listening to her late father, Enrique Morente.

What about Fernanda and Bernarda or Maria Soto. There are so many wonderful cantaoras that the mind locks up trying to name them.

As already mentioned La Niña de los Peiñes and Enrique Morente are a big influence on Estrella Morente.

La Niña de los Peiñes

Enrique Morente

I think this is another of her influences? (as well as Camaron's)
La Perla de Cadiz

That's too bad- Pull it off of You tube.

Try canción española or copla: Estrella is guapa but she is not a good cantaora, her husband, Javier Conde, is guapo but he is not a good matador de toros.

If you are really interested in flamenco, look elsewhere.

Is he even a good matador de truchas?

spain -> RE: recommendation (Sep. 1 2017 15:24:55)

had kinda a double take with what indigo and morante saying. but must specify one thing, i realy got to flamenco kinda randomly and what i must say is, that the songs i mentioned from estrella are great for me because its fire, melody, love clapping on flamenco. i realy dont know about its rules there are in this music, prob just from what i can hear out. anyway estrella s voice is right what i also like on her [:)]. anyway tried listen to bit more of ur recommendations still havent found any, just what i ve known remedios - mala malita, those are exactly the songs, which are what im looking for. also vengo soundtrack is good for me. so will see on my way of exploring.

really? what did i say?

I think you read something in that wasn't there.

I wasn't questioning your taste in liking Estrella, but the recommendations of other people who seem to want to tell you what you should be listening to rather than suggesting things you might actually like![:D]

My personal taste doesn't really come into it, 'cos I actually like all the stuff people think you should be listening to, as well as the more flamenco side of Estrella etc.

For example, I don't think anyone mentioned Niña Pastori, who you might like. I like her voice, and I like when she sings flamenco, but I don't like all her pop poop stuff, which is mostly what she does....

Have you seen the Estrella Morente DVD? I think it's called "Casa Cueva Y Escenario"

Piwin -> RE: recommendation (Sep. 1 2017 17:27:02)

(edit: put a huge IMHO on this entire post. It's just my honest opinion, not trying to discourage or put down anyone's taste) I guess it depends on whether you're interested in better understanding the aesthetics of flamenco or not. It's not rules or anything, it's just that opinions and tastes are also shaped by other things that you compare an artist to. So someone who grew up in a flamenco environment and listens to Estrella for the first time will have a different first impression than someone who's coming at it from another setting. I like some of her stuff. The lighter stuff. But it's true that when it comes to cante jondo she just doesn't have the chops IMO. She has a hard time communicating real emotion I think. So the happy clappy stuff por fiesta works fine for her but anything deeper than that and it falls flat.

This might be unfair to her because she's singing in a foreign language and it's a cover from another genre but, well her father knew how to do it, she doesn't. You should be hearing sadness, sheer desperation, in this song. Maybe you can hear it. Personally I can't. To me, if I'm completely honest, it's somewhere between the buzzing of a mosquito and the feeling of holding a slug in your hand. Something vaguely irritating and icky about it. I don't feel this when she's singing the lighter stuff that require less emotional investment.

spain -> RE: recommendation (Sep. 1 2017 17:39:36)

i meant the post which contained just "??" like answer to something similar to estrella. anyway actualy i did hear a bit of almost any mentioned by you all, just trying to explain, that havent found anything much what would fit to me. i realy like the "faster one" flamenco or hope u know what i mean, with more fire in it. like the rythms, and clapping, thats prob all i can describe about it. those estrella songs i know from youtube are amazing even with her acting in it, as its a live show. dont know if there is such a side of flamenco where is like less guitars and more rythmic or other melody base. hope its not a stupid question or maybe its just a subjectivity of wieving. just for me tangos del cerro, bulerias de los muelles by her are the best of flamenco i heard for now. cant help with it. [:)]

spain -> RE: recommendation (Sep. 1 2017 17:51:49)

after all my really start was vengo ost - gritos de guerra which is actualy also the best i heard. so dont know, now u can express to it. [&:]

Piwin -> RE: recommendation (Sep. 1 2017 17:59:30)

Sounds like you're not so much looking for an artist as a type of song, which would be bulerias or tangos.

How about this?

spain -> RE: recommendation (Sep. 1 2017 18:08:16)

yeah that be a lot what i mean. how many types there are even?

spain -> RE: recommendation (Sep. 1 2017 18:11:13)

this one sounds good indeed thanks.

ah, maybe you're looking for rumba catalan?
Like:
or anything by the Gipsy Kings. I don't know enough about rumberos and no female singer comes to mind. Maybe some of the rumba experts on here can help?

I'm trying!![:D]
