That guitar either had D'Addarrio normal tension of Augustine normal tension. As I recall that guitar was made with a top that had a grain swirl in it up near the neck. People thought is was a crack. It was a like giant bearclaw grain marking. In retrospect I should have saved that top for a cutaway and excised that section of wood.

Ashame, because other than the cosmetic spot of grain interest
it is high quality Balkan harvested spruce. The guitar is now owned by a Foro member and is very good I hear. The first person who bought it rejected it on sight because of the grain and said it did not sound bright.

I don't think that guitar settled in and woke up until you began playing it a few days. Maybe I should send them out with La Bella 820 to ensure they sparkle...hahah

That does indeed sound great Todd! I'm thinking possibly your guitar may be a little more sympathetic to trebles? D'Adarios don't sound quite that bright on any of my guitars...I know my teacher doesn't like D'Adarios trebles for the same reason...

Yeah Len, i think there are many things that contribute to tone other
than the strings.

I have found over the years, as i've tried all the
different trebles out there from carbon to nylgut to rectified, though they do seem a bit brighter at first, when i record something, it ends up sounding basically the same on the recordings. In fact, i couldnt tell you which trebles i'm using on which of my recordings just by listening.

D'addarios are great for me not so much for the sound, but the J46 diameter and tension feels just right for my hands and nail length/shape.
And when it feels right, i can get the tone i want.

There is also a demonstrable difference in twinkle between D'Addario Normal tension and High Tension, so there's that. I use Normal tension strings about 80% of the time, but the last guitar I made I strung it up with high tension and it was bigger and brighter - I then took the Highs off and put on a set a stretched normals. Not the same so I returned to the high tension.


And really the reason use Normals is because I bought a few dozen sets and half as many Highs. When I cut through the Normal sets I used Highs. Next time I may order La Bella's and High tension D'Adaario.

I used Normal tension for many years, but now I think it may be better to show guitars with high tension strings as most players will change over to high tension anyway.

I agree D'Addario EJ line of string is "The" reference string. Kind of like the flat setting of a premium stereo amplifier. But, I always like more treble.

Therefore, I agree with Ricardo on "Sparkly, twinkly trebles" recommendation of Luthier 20's, La Bella 820's and 427 trebles.

Plus, I like the Conde 860's trebles. I don't know who makes them for Conde, but they are a little different. My guess is whoever manufactures the string are making then to meet Conde's specifications. Similar to the way CTS has set up new tooling for "Historic" 5% lower tolerance tone pots for Gibson. Deep pockets seem to get the cream of the crop.

Liked the La Bella blacks a lot better than the EJ trebles. Just put on the Hannabachs and I'm already impressed, bright from the beginning! We'll see how it goes. Unfortunately still recovering from sprained fingers so I can't post a sound clip yet.

On Ricardo testimony I ordered a dozen sets of La Bella 820's high tension and have been putting them on classicals and flamencos. I like them. On my flamencos they are warm and dirty, but on my small classical model they sing out, but give some nice dirt to the bass. Strings are funny, I like almost all of them, but for different reasons.

I've arrived at the conclusion that for new guitars strings don't matter too much as long as they are vetted as quality brands. I'm not so married to the idea of D'Addario normal tension as my benchmark as I was. Players are going to experiment to what suits them and the guitar.

Lennie, I did not know you hurt your fingers, rapid recovery and be careful out there in the land of the wild sawzall. You can play a lot with thumb only!

Let's hope it doesn't come to that! lol
I tripped 3 stories up on some scaffolding, luckily I didn't fall OFF the scaffolding or it could've been a lot worse.

Guess I am in a rut, but over and over I have tried other treble strings, and on all guitars come back to the Corum Alliance HT. The basses are fine too.
