Haku is a beautiful beast!
What do you want for the fish box guitar? I love it!

Hakuchan is nice, but if you have food he will grab at it with his teeth and it hurts if he nips you. I built the corral with my friend Shigehisa, it's his donkey. He lives in front of my shop and today he pulled on the gate rope and untied the knot. I eventually glanced out the window and saw him. He won't run away, but the little kids need to have an adult around if he's cruising the driveway.

We feed him bamboo leaves and sweet potatoes. But he braes like crazy. I got a couple of these guitars going, I'm looking to get 300.00 plus shipping - but I'm sort of smitten with the whole cigar box sound and I'm going to make more of them. It's just too much fun to make hacked and cracked guitars next to flamenco guitars you labor over.

Here isj ust the guitar sound, I'm trying to figure out how to play blues..

Thanks for introducing Haku-chan!

I like the fish box blues shamisen, it could (should!) develop a real cult following.

You could figure out how to play the blues on it, or you could become the Hamza El Din of southern Japan... so many possibilities.

When I first saw it, however, it inevitably brought to mind the song that seems to be obligatory for all Japanese culture steeped gaijin:

Oji-san joke vely funnay!

Hai sa or Hai ya is very common at street matsuri. My across the alley neighbor is the one who leads the Akune street festival music every year. She is kind of famous for being a deep south Japan character. I have some pictures somewhere. The city hires a big semi truck and they remove one side of the truck and if becomes a boxed stage. Tachan sits in there with her girl band and leads with shamisen, and sings hai-ya about fours hours. I always wander by at some point and leave a cold beer at her feet.

Here is another fish box I'm working on- Tin roof top. Amazingly is has a sweet sound with a long overtone drenched sustain. It's like a Hawaiian guitar step child. I have it tuned to open C CEC.

It has an addictive simple sound.

In researching this stuff in has not ceased to amaze at how these rough instruments can in the hands of a good player make profound music.

This is the sound sample of the one with the tin roof for a top. I think it sounds really good. A friend of mine in CA who play a little slide guitar bought it.

Now it's getting out of hand -

A talk and sound demo of a Cigar Box Slide guitar commission I just completed. The thing I like about making this style guitar is the freedom to use re-purposed parts and random items I find, or that are sitting about the shop. The ingenuity is in mashing it all together into a unique object that gets LOUD!
