yes, they are keratin not cellulose.

Well, I have no idea what ammonia does to keratin.

You can use self-adhesive fiberglass or silk wrap. Just add a drop of glue on top. The glue I use is called BondTite. It is carried by GuitarPlayerNails.

I used to have a constant headache trying to figure out how to save my nails. One night, at a concert, I lost 4 of them. That did it for me. I've now been using GuitarPlayerNails for a decade or so and I never look back.

I have thought about getting these, should I break a nail while fixing my bike or whatever.

I use silk and superglue on my nail ends (4-5mm), but the silk often lifts up after a more percussive palo such as bulerias. I usually notice it and pull the remaining wrap off with my teeth mid piece, trying to hold back a bit.

Which grades of GPN do you use Grisha? How long do they last before they come off? Does that happen mid piece?

I am guessing, sine the string is not brushing past the joint between nail and silk as in my methos, they might last longer. The sweat coming through my fingers does seem to cause the superglue to fail also, so they fall off anyway within a day (even with brand new CA glue).

Two things that might help some:

-keeping nails relatively short
-biotin or other supplements

Thanks Grisha and everyone.

I will try Grisha's suggestion, as the UV cured stuff is not working for me. If put on bare nails, it peels off easily. If put over the glue I have (Brush on Krazy, probably too old), the glue cracks when I play and the whole mess peels off. Same if I use Sally Hansen Diamond Strength treatment under the UV stuff.

I have some self-adhesive silk that came with a nail repair kit a long time ago. As a last ditch effort to find a use for the expensive UV stuff, I'm going to try combining the two, but I suspect it will peel off easily.

With all the attempts I've made to reinforce my nails lately, I've at least gotten in more practicing than I had in a long time.

For what it's worth
I bought a UV lamp on gumtree for $10
Came with a few unused bottles of Gel sealer
I get about a month of use using this process

Curious that Ethan didn't get such good results.

I wonder how much variation there is fron one gel product to another.

AlVal, what's the make / product name of the gel sealer you're using?

AlVãl -> RE: Nail reinforcement (May 7 2017 1:41:12)

I first went to a salon and observed how they put the crap on

The nail has to be clean
Like really clean
Using acetone - not the typical nail polish remover
Lightly file before putting anything on with one of those buffer boards
Glue the strip
Dry
File
Then the sealer
Then lamp for about 40 secs

The brand name is Niko sealant - maybe there is inconsistent manufacturing between brands - can't really say

Figure were all different and results will vary

I play 3 X three hour classes a week and 2 one hour classes
At least one gig a week with dancers along with solo or 'latin' group type work

My nails are short by most comparisons

No issue with this process for me - after a month it starts to chip then remove and start again
Courses for horses

Pretty sure he means silk.

AlVãl -> RE: Nail reinforcement (May 7 2017 4:26:00)

Yep
The silk in the pic
Apologies for not making that clear

Might add
My nails are naturally thick
My girlfriend thinks there's some horse DNA but that another story .. ( sic )
I used nothing before accomp dancers for decades without issues

Maintence also
Antiseptic before applying the crap to stop any health issues
Oil on the cuticles while it's on

But glue also works fine just short lived for me

Hope that helps

that was a good read between sets on a sunday afternoon...thanks for that..a strange and unusual death if it be more the truth than pneumonia ...

My Indo Euro background is close but going by the general vibe I think my linage is more connected to 'Astrid the Mediocre' (citation needed)

Who was it who glued their or their wife's toenails onto theirs ?

constructordeguitarras -> RE: Nail reinforcement (May 16 2017 1:53:21)

Well, I bought one of almost everything they had a guitarplayernails.com and was daunted by the procedure for putting on the plastic nails, so I put on a strip of silk fabric and used their brush on nail glue over it and it seemed pretty good, but kind of soft. So I put my UV cured stuff over that, and it lasted for about a day. Then I started getting notches in my middle finger nail (again) and was so disheartened that I took the advice of someone I've been working on duets with and went to the nail salon where he gets his nails done.

I had ripped off the coating on my middle finger but still had stuff on my ring and index. I thought I would get just my middle finger done and maybe my thumb, though I haven't had much need to reinforce that one. I told them that I would come back when the stuff on the ring and index came off, but they said they could easily take it off, and they did. My God, they use power tools! Rotary files in Dremmel-like devices. And she didn't hurt me or my natural nails as I feared she might.

What I had done is called an acrylic nail job. They brush a combination of a powder and a liquid onto your nails and it dries without UV light, though my hand was placed under a small blow dryer for a few minutes. Then the woman expertly filed the coating to shape. She had asked if I wanted my nails any longer, and I said okay, the middle one about a mm longer, and she did that just by extending the powder/liquid beyond my nail. This is very strong stuff and rather hard. Is taking some getting used to. Also clicking a bit when I play, but I think that may be because they are a little too long.

The fee was $15 and I tipped the woman who worked on me $5. I think it was worth it. My duet partner Terence goes back to them regularly when the coatings on his nails need repairing, maybe once a month I think. It seems like this will last and be worth it.
