Well, I bought one of almost everything they had a guitarplayernails.com and was daunted by the procedure for putting on the plastic nails, so I put on a strip of silk fabric and used their brush on nail glue over it and it seemed pretty good, but kind of soft. So I put my UV cured stuff over that, and it lasted for about a day. Then I started getting notches in my middle finger nail (again) and was so disheartened that I took the advice of someone I've been working on duets with and went to the nail salon where he gets his nails done.
I had ripped off the coating on my middle finger but still had stuff on my ring and index. I thought I would get just my middle finger done and maybe my thumb, though I haven't had much need to reinforce that one. I told them that I would come back when the stuff on the ring and index came off, but they said they could easily take it off, and they did. My God, they use power tools! Rotary files in Dremmel-like devices. And she didn't hurt me or my natural nails as I feared she might.
What I had done is called an acrylic nail job. They brush a combination of a powder and a liquid onto your nails and it dries without UV light, though my hand was placed under a small blow dryer for a few minutes. Then the woman expertly filed the coating to shape. She had asked if I wanted my nails any longer, and I said okay, the middle one about a mm longer, and she did that just by extending the powder/liquid beyond my nail. This is very strong stuff and rather hard. Is taking some getting used to. Also clicking a bit when I play, but I think that may be because they are a little too long.
The fee was $15 and I tipped the woman who worked on me $5. I think it was worth it. My duet partner Terence goes back to them regularly when the coatings on his nails need repairing, maybe once a month I think. It seems like this will last and be worth it.
