NorCalluthier -> Ramon Montoya Mineras? (Apr. 13 2017 16:17:09)

Hello All,

I have a recording of Dave Jones (David Serva) playing a Mineras. Years ago Chris Carnes said he thought that it was basically Ramon Montoya's. I believe that Ramon is credited with originating the Mineras Toque.

Anyway, I'm looking for Mineras info, tab, recordings etc. and can send along a copy of the 1962 recording of David's if you are interested.

Cheers,

Brian Burns

Alain Faucher transcribed most of Ramon's early recordings including one of the mineras. It's in standard notation only, but a great thing to have in the library.

As well as available recordings of Montoya playing his Mineras, Paco Peña recorded it in the '80's on his album of Montoya and Ricardo (called something like: "Guitar Music of Ramon Montoya and Niño Ricardo").

Hello Ricardo and Mark,

Someone has put what appears to be all of Ramon Montoya's recordings on youtube---here are links to two versions of his mineras:

Chris Carnes was right, David's mineras is essentially Ramon's.

Thanks for your help guys.

Cheers,

Brian

Hi Brian - just saw this - good to hear from you.

Many years ago (around 1972) you let me record a tape of David from a KPFA radio show that had a version of the minera you mention - it is very similar to Montoya's, but David adds a beautiful 'Levantica' melody that Montoya used in his rondeña.

Because you mentioned the minera, when I asked about it in my first lesson with David - in 1972 - he recorded another version of it, which was a bit different. I recorded it on my CD (Cinfución, Juan Moro) - it is called 'Levantica'.

By the way, a few years ago I got the Tamura guitar you sold me back after a 40 year loan to a friend.

best, John

Hi Juan,

Long time no see, but I remember you from the days of the Flamenco Society of San Jose, when I was writing for Guitar International. I have lots of photos that include you (and Sara). Here’s one from the Hayward Gallery in 1985:
