RobJe -> Shaving Santos (Apr. 1 2017 9:56:41)

New facts have emerged about the life of the great luthier Santos Hernandez. It is well known that he was a secretive man and careful with his money and this new story reports on how these two traits came in to conflict over the matter of his beard.

Rather than entering the street to go to the barber’s shop for a wet shave, he found a young man who would come to his workshop. He was delighted to find that the young man refused payment but asked instead for some lessons in guitar making. After careful consideration Santos decided that this absolute beginner would be no threat to him and each morning he showed the man one of the processes he was engaged in.

Unbeknown to Santos the young man had set up a bench in his barber’s shop and was busy constructing guitars in the breaks between customers. Often the two tasks would get a little mixed, especially when he absentmindedly wiped the soap and stubble from the razor on the braces of a newly prepared top leaving a white residue. In later years luthiers mistakenly identified the white residue as salt and so the story of fine tuning braces by rubbing with salt emerged.

New research has identified the white residue as soap and found traces of stubble.

Eventually the little barber, Marcelo became a legend himself.

The rest is history.

Rob
