quote:
In Vietnam it's Tet, but the E has some crazy squiggles. It is indeed Tet, but never having learned Vietnamese, I was wondering how one wishes someone "Happy New Year" in Vietnamese. I found out today. My Barber is Vietnamese, and I went in for a shave this morning. In honor of Tet, he was wearing a very nice pinstriped suit and was going to celebrate with family later. He wrote out "Happy New Year" for me, which, in Vietnamese, is "Chuc Mung Nam Moi." I omitted all the diacritical marks, as my key board doesn't have them. His barber shop is located in a Vietnamese center called Eden Center, and it has about 20 different Vietnamese restaurants, a couple of super markets, and many jewelry shops and travel agencies. Marta and I have been going to Eden Center since it opened when we want good Vietnamese food, whether full dinners, ban mi, or pho. It is all superb. So, to all Mandarin speakers: Gong Xi Fa Cai. To all Cantonese speakers: Kong Hee Fatt Choy. And to all Vietnamese speakers: Chuc Mung Nam Moi. May the Year of the Rooster grace everyone with prosperity and interesting times. Bill
