Ola friends -

In the generic buleria groove you hear so often:

What beats does the contra palmeiro play on?

I'm assuming the base palmeiro is going

(12: silent) 1 2 3 4 5 (6: silent) 7 8 9 10 11

And the total groove sounds like:

(12) 1 AND 2 3 4 5 <repeat>

So is the contra/2nd palmeiro going?

(12) (1) AND (2) 3 4 5 <REPEAT>

And for something like this:

is the contra?:

(12) AND (1) AND (2) 3 4 5

And if you have only 1 palmeiro, is it normal to ask that person to put that contra moment in there, along with the base and just.... clap faster? :)
Or is that not reasonable once the tempo gets up there?

Thanks!

Pretty sure the contra palmero is hitting like this.
(12 rest/foot) 1 & (2rest) 3 4 5

Thanks Lenador!

Anyone else want to weigh in?

A lone palmero can certainly double up and do the contra beats sometimes. As a player my bigger concern is tempo, not the patten the palmero chooses. Tempo and DYNAMICS. That's where the groove needs to be found. Too often you get dance class style WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK constant noise, which would be less annoying if it actually WERE metronomic. [8|]

Agreed! WHACK is only good in a Run DMC lyric.

As for the division of labor, do you agree with Lenador Ricardo?

No, the 12 is played the 1 is not.

Alright, 4 out of 6 aint bad. [:D]
You really think it's 12 & 2 3 4 5???

turnermoran -> RE: Buleria, 2 Palmeiros: how do you get that rhythm? (Jan. 25 2017 21:42:53)

So contra palmeiro actually plays 12(quietly played??) 1 AND (2) 3 4 5?

Ricardo -> RE: Buleria, 2 Palmeiros: how do you get that rhythm? (Jan. 26 2017 10:37:34)

12 is played, not quietly but same dynamic as 4,5,6. & is loud, 2 is not played, 3 is loud. The other pattern 12 and 6 are also played, but 1, 3 are loud. IF you count to 12 than you must include the same for 7,9 being loud, and the contra pattern is doing 6, & between 7-8, and 9 are loud as well.

Jeez that all sounds more confusing than it really is. You basically accident the up beat except not so strong an accent on 5 or 11 as you might think. In fact a lot of folks that feel this instinctively accent 5 and 11 but I don't like it when I am playing.

Ricardo
