Guys, what are your favorite thumb exercises? I like amir j. haddad exercise, and nunez https://youtu.be/d-R4OZ44MCI

Ricardo -> RE: Thumb speed (Jan. 15 2017 17:57:13)

Some of my favorite thumb stuff:

Cervantes -> RE: Thumb speed (Jan. 15 2017 21:22:44)

Ole!!!

Now we need a tab of that [:D]

How long is your thumb nail? Mine seems to be too long right now making it harder to play.

Dudnote -> RE: Thumb speed (Jan. 15 2017 22:29:02)

Thanks Ricardo, nice licks!!!

Was watching a Juan Martin zapateado vid recently. His thumb nail seems to be about 1 inch long.

About 6mm works well for me.

Yeah but....does it work for her?!

clap clap clap. The stadium went wild and did a triple wave that joke was so funny. I need a long holiday somewhere.

Just measured mine and its only 4mm, but still feels long to me. Maybe its the shape its pretty rounded. Watching Ricardo's video his looks pretty short.

This is what I got for the 2nd part. I can't check it through right now, but I think it's more or less there. The alzapua was easier to work out, I can tab it in a day or two if anyone needs.

Good job!

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Thumb speed (Jan. 18 2017 0:34:38)

Here is one that my teacher showed me a long time ago, pretty effective:

Is that second one Giuliani, Barrios or what? I really need to get going on Alzapua. It's the one technique I have been ignoring, so bring it on. I have been doing a lot of Arp and its really helped. Ramzi, looks like your guitar collection is growing!t

St33 -> RE: Thumb speed (Jan. 18 2017 18:54:51)

I did not mean alzapua, i mean scales passages

Villa-Lobos, Etude No.1

Dudnote -> RE: Thumb speed (Jan. 19 2017 1:54:14)

It sounds like you just need a bunch of pulgar heavy falsettas and fills where you're not going to be tempted to 'cheat' with ligado, and then just slowly turn up the meteronome on them. Actually, 'pulgar heavy' might not even be a good description, because it implies endurance more than speed, for speed training you want short bursts.

I've spend a fair bit of time learning the falsettas for Alegria en Do from this youtube channel, if I turn my meteronome up much over 130 some of the pulgar definetly gets challenging.

Here's a Tomatito fill for bulerias. Starts on 6 ends on 10, straight 8th notes. FAF#AGAG#BbA (pull off for the last note & mute).

@Ricardo - thanks man. I like these a lot, it won't be long before the local dance school gets to hear them too [;)]

Thumb nail looks a bit long. That can slow you down.

You're not really getting that bright flamenco click with the thumb.

Make sure you're getting the right sound before you worry about speed.

Just saw this. You're way faster than me, so I'm outta here [:D][:D]

rombsix -> RE: Thumb speed (Jan. 19 2017 3:43:43)

Yup, it's Villa-Lobos.

Those two guitars in the above videos live in Beirut, actually, so I don't have access to them. I have guitars scattered all over now: Beirut, Nashville, New Haven. [8D][:D]

The nice thing is that if you combine the money I've spent on all my guitars so far, it does not exceed $5K over the 15 years I've been playing. [:D] That's 90 cents per day. Not too shabby. [:D][8D]
