So for a while now I have been thinking about getting a glass fronted cabinet to hang and store 6 guitars inside. However it seems that all the guitar shops have custom made cabinets. Paco talked in a video about the problems of getting a guitar cabinet and he edventually made one with a friend. There seems to be a lot of links online to "how to make a guitar cabinet" but not how to buy one.

Does anyone here currently keep their guitars in a cabinet?
If so, where did you get it and can you post photo and dimensions please?

What I really want is something like in the photos below.

I seriously considered this thing, and having a special one made to my design some years ago. I gave it up after realizing the price tag meant giving up one or two of the best guitars I wanted to put in it!!! [:D]

In that famous interview, Paco said that at home he used to keep his Conde in the case and practice with more comfortable guitars: he then showed a very nice cabinet plenty of guitars ready at hand.
I remember to have read somewhere that when he was home he moslty played a Santos a Ramirez and a Jose Rodriguez but I'm sure he had a lot of guitars to chose from..
In my case I cannot play regularly more than 2 guitars; the other guitars I have are practically unused.

That would not be difficult to build for an experienced wood worker.
I would take it on but I am guessing you are in Spain so shipping would not be practical.
The cost would be mostly in labor and not in material as is the case for any fine wood working project.

I wondered if it would be possible to buy something and modify it. I found this on ebay uk. 48" high and 18" deep.

Of course, you can easily modify it by adding a rack to hold the neck and something soft as a floor.

Modifying is gunna be the cheapest way to go. Custom cabinets (which is really what this is) run on average $500 a linear foot in my neck of the woods.

Yeah...I found that a custom cabinet in the USA costs $4000-$5000. Thats crazy money for a case. I got a quote from a carpenter in spain to build a custom cabinet and he said it was minimum of 1500 euros for the materials and labour.
Thats just too much.

A friend suggested I look for a used guitar cabinet. Unfortunately they dont come up for sale. Chances are that if you have one, you will be using it!!

I agree with everyones opinion that the way to go is to buy a second hand cabinet or display case and customise it myself. There are many second hand warehouses where i could find a similar cabinet, knock out the front and side panels and replace them with glass. This would cost 100 euros and a lot of sanding and varnishing.

Alberto Martin who is a luthier living close to me suggested he could easily make the rack inside to support the guitars. Here are a couple pictures of his home made guitar cabinet.

I only have two and trying to sell one which is my beginner guitar.

Interesting.... I am in the process of building phase 1 of a organizer/guitar display cabinet. [:D] This weekend I will be staining the base cabinet which I built with a drawer to store one of my humicases.

In a couple of weeks I'll take some PICS to post the finished base cabinet [:)]

Hi,
You could also search for humidor cabinets designed for cigar storage. They are already set up to maintain humidity and monitoring. Here is an example for 1500 or so.

Buying a big enough display cabinet from etsy or ebay, emptying it properly and putting similar stand to this inside it would be the way to go for me:

Lots of good ideas there guys. I like the rockstand, that would be great fitted inside a cabinet. I decided to try and find a second hand cabinet at the weekend.

I made a rough plan of the size I would need. The guitars are roughly 1 metre long by about 40 cm wide. My cabinet would need to be at least 110 cm tall inside and at least 45 cm wide in order to fit the instruments in comfortably.

So I spent the weekend going to large markets where lots of second hand furniture and antiques are sold. On Saturday I spent a very frustrating morning in Fuengirola looking at old cupboards and cabinets only to find they were all too small or needed too much work....and then came back to my car to find it had been towed away [:@][:@][:@]

However on sunday I got really lucky. I went to a rastro inland and found an antique glass Gun cabinet or "Armero" for sale. This was used for storing shotguns and rifles which are only slightly longer than a guitar. I picked this up for the bargain price of 35 euros (around 40 dollars)

The cabinet is the right height for the guitars but to store them sideways, it needs to be much wider. This means removing the top and bottom, extending the sides, putting in new glass, fitting the racks and putting it all back together again.

This will cost around 500 euros which is still a lot better than buying a new cabinet.

The other alternative is to leave it as it is. I can already fit 2 guitars in it facing frontways. This means that I just need to put in hooks for two guitars and basically have the whole thing cleaned up. The whole project will cost around 100 euros.

I can now look for another cabinet which is closer to the correct size and have it modified. What do you guys think??? Should I keep the gun cabinet as it is and store only 2 guitars in it or should I convert it into a larger cabinet to store 5 guitars?

Looks like it's upholstered inside no? Just another thing you'd have to deal with if you modify it. I suppose it depends on your situation. If space is a premium having a single cabinet would make a big difference. Is this 500 euro number a fixed price from someone? If it's you're best estimate of what it would take I'd slap another 20% to it. I estimate construction projects every day and am usually pretty spot on but for whatever reason when I do my own little home projects I always end up about 20-30% over my initial estimate.

Enlarging that will be a pain. I would stick with it and continue the hunt but it's going to be a challenge as I can only think of three objects that would use such a cabinet. Guns, books and chinaware, all too shallow. What about an armoire (loads of them about in Spain) then swap the drawers and runners for glass doors?

Yes Leñador...its already upholstered. It basically just need to have the woodwork made good, add some feet and a couple of guitar hooks.
Space is a problem but I could put this cabinet in one room and a guitar cabinet in another. I kind of want to leave the piece in as much original condition as I can. I think I got lucky with a nice cabinet!

Escribano - I think for the money im better off leaving this case as it is and finding another bigger one. I have been looking for a suitable armoire but have not found one yet. That was my original plan to take out the drawers and replace the panels with glass. Its just a pain finding one that is the right size.

Estevan - No....... Dont even mention them. I have no idea what to do with them now. That was before the Paco de Lucia record odyssey. I have seriously got to get a bigger house[:D][:D][:D]

The one I posted earlier was the right size so they do exist. It wasn't so beautiful as the one you have bought though. Be patient - keep looking!

Is a display case as good as keeping it in the case as long as the sun is not hitting it? I'm getting tired of unzipping my case several times a day. It would be nice to just open a door and grab it and would a nice display.

Why not? Also if you have big enough humidifier, you can take care of two(or more) guitars at once when the air is dry.

My quest continues for a bigger cabinet. I was looking in some antique and second hand furniture warehouses. Its quite easy to find display cases but not ones that are suitable size. For example on saturday I found this display case in the back of an antique shop. Its a glass cabinet on top of two drawers. The case is just over 40 cm wide and the whole unit stands over 2 metres tall. It even has lights inside. Its plenty big enough to convert into a guitar display. Cost is 300 euros plus delivery.

The thing is that the unit is enormous and is in one piece. It is not possible to remove the glass display top from the botton drawers and this is a problem with many cabinets. They are simply too big. This will not fit in my house and I will still have to pay to convert it. I need to find a cabinet where the top part is separate.....or find a smaller cabinet to convert. If I had a bigger house I might consider this unit and for 300 Euros its a nice piece. Its good to know that I can find pieces of this size at this price but I still want to find a smaller and cheaper alternative.

So yesterday I think I found the solution. I went to a big furniture market and saw this cabinet for sale. Its actually the top part of a cabinet but the bottom part had been sold separately as a sideboard. This cabinet is 110 cm high which is tall enough for the guitars and at 180 cm long is a little bit bigger than I wanted. Its only 36 cm wide which means I will need to hang the guitars at a 45 degree angle inside. However that is not a major problem. It is very heavy and is made of solid cherry wood. It takes two guys to move it.

Best of all I got it for 150 euros including delivery. All I need to do is refit the inside with racks and add some upholstery and lights but no need to change the size of it.

So far my costs have been
Gun cabinet - 35 Euros
Display cabinet - 150 Euros

I will keep you updated on the refit process and costs involved but I think this will look great when it is finished. What I have learned from this exercise is that
1. Its better and cheaper to find a cabinet closer to the correct size than to try to convert a smaller piece of furniture. This is a lot of work and extra cost.
2. There are lots of cabinets out there on Ebay, local facebook selling pages, Sunday markets and second hand furniture warehouses and you can find something suitable for under 200 euros.
3. Your hardest task is looking around and negotiating prices. It took me 5 days of looking at furniture to find these 2 pieces.

Out of curiosity, how will you be humidifying this case?

One of the tricky bits of those cabinets is getting air circulation so the moisture doesn't pool up in one spot and cause mold.

Also, how will you be sealing the cabinet?

Hi Hem....great to see you here. Seems like a long time!!!
To answer your question, I dont know[:D] Im hoping that some friendly forum members here will advise me on the best thing to do. In the south of Spain we dont have so much of a problem with damp. The climate here is closer to that of Texas. I am not worried about mould or freezing temperatures. Today is a typical winter day with around 12 degrees.

The cabinet arrived today and it fits almost perfectly into the space I had in mind. I have put an old guitar inside to check the size. The height is perfect but the guitars will need to be angled to fit inside. The room is actually quite dark but the photo makes it look like its very bright. The direct sun wont actually hit the glass in real life.

Looks perfect for the job. Am I right in assuming it is not so much the humidity, as it is the changes in humidity that is the problem? It changed a fair amount in my village in the mountains but Marbella looks pretty consistent.
