Does anyone know of a source for black veneer that is actually good looking?

None of the artificially dyed black veneer looks as good as real ebony. Somehow the blackness is not intense enough. I would like to find a substitute for ebony and only use ebony where it is really necessary.

I have in the past dyed pearwood black with logwood chips. The result was marvellous, just as good looking as ebony. It was a hassle to do, and now even logwood is hard to come by.

You have piqued my curiosity. Why do you want to find a substitute to look like ebony instead of just using real ebony? Wouldn't the use of a substitute and trying to pass it off (visually, at least) as ebony cheapen the product? What makes the use of authentic ebony "really necessary," as opposed to unnecessary?

Ebony is soon to be banned. We need it for fingerboards for example. So I thought that it would be good to use something else for purflings and rosettes.
