ORIGINAL: Staghound Passive systems are perfectly capable of pushing the signal through the cable ,as you put it. The pre amp is probably fitted ,as much to provide the player with on board control over EQ and volume as anything. I am just curious,as to reasons why under saddle pickups sound so crap. Do you have any ideas in that respect?? Jeez dude....IT IS BECAUSE YOUR EARS ARE USED TO COMPRESSION SOUND WAVES IN THE AIR COMING FROM GUITAR SOUNDBOARD VIA A COMPLEX STRING/WOOD/FINGER SYSTEM OF TONE PRODUCTION, PIEZO AND TRANSDUCER USE PHYSICAL VIBRATION OF THE STRING/WOOD ONLY THROUGH SOME WIRES. External mics capture the sound best. Internal mics second best. The reason steel strings sound the same (MORE OR LESS, cuz I disagree with you that this is true)via string vibration vs nylon is a much more complex physics issue. DEAL WITH IT DUDE.
