Talking about my preference when playing SOLO!!!!!! which is my main interest. In addition to having zero opportunity to play for singers in my location, I also have little desire to do so.

Well, all the masters that you notice that seem to use one, feel completely different than you. You want to know why they use a capo for solos? The answer is because they know and love the cante, too bad you don't like that answer.

Only thing i like with capo is Bulerias. I like 3rd fret.

Everything else sounds and feels better with no capo.

Don't forget Sabicas' advice for playing solo, something like: "if you want to play solo flamenco guitar, first spend 20 years accompanying dance, then 20 years accompanying singing, then you are ready to play solo flamenco guitar"

btw, does anyone have the source and accurate/original quote from Sabicas?

I for one remember reading that 20 years ago myself and felt it was a ridiculous exaggeration....and can safely now say it's quite an accurate statement. I only admit he meant you do that time congruently.

I have played for dance classes for at least 20 years, really need to work on cante accompaniment - still hoping to be ready to play solo one day![;)]

If I recall correctly, it’s from some early LP sleeve — possibly one of the Elektra ones. But you’d have to pay me money to go and check [:D]

It reduces the competition, though.

Despite the universal plaudits, Sabas seems to have been strangely insecure. Remember that “80% of what is currently being played is mine” line when everybody was copying Lucía?

And a friend of mine was present when Niño Ricardo was mentioned. Sabas said “Ah yes, he plays my material very well”. [:o]

You mean concurrently?

Concurrently yes...speil Cheque again.

Sabicas plays direct quotes from R. Montoya, N. Ricardo, and others I am sure. Pepe Martinez played some Sabicas note for note, and of course Paco Peña, but I feel more people copied Melchor and N. Ricardo until Lucia came along.
