Richard Jernigan -> Current Tomatito group? (Sep. 7 2016 17:37:24)

Tomatito is coming back to Austin on November 2. Last time I saw him here he had with him the fantastic dancer Paloma Fantova, though she was only allowed two pieces. For me she was definitely the high point of the evening.

Though playing flamenco guitar is still one of my significant musical activities, I find that I listen to solo guitar or the modern ensembles less and less. For me the singing in the present style of stage shows is even more ironed out than in dance troupes 30 years ago.

Does anyone know who is in Tomatito's current ensemble? Any interesting dancers?

Thanks,

RNJ

OK, finally found the web page for the USA tour:

http://sroartists.com/artists/tomatito/#home

Schedule is under "Itinerary", cast of characters is under "Promo Assets/Program Notes."

It says that second guitar is Jose de Tomate, dancer is Jose Maya. There are some Youtube clips of Maya I haven't checked out yet. As far as I know, not the star quality of Paloma Fantova.

This is likely our line up right here.

One less guitar player is good, last time he was here it was a lot of "you guys play rhythm and I'll solo pretty melodies". I was kinda bored to tears. I may give it one more chance. Mas cante porfa, mas cante! Paloma was my highlight too, it was the only time the singers sang more than a chorus.

Joselito romero (Jose Maya) one of the best of all times. But he doesn't have boobies.

OK, I´ll check those other Youtube clips for Jose Maya. Since he has no boobies, maybe they'll let him do more than two numbers.

Meanwhile, on the same Youtube page as Leñador´s link, Rocío Marquez and Dani de Moron por caracoles. Reminds me of when I was 19 years old listening to Rafael Romero ¨El Gallina ¨and Perico el del Lunar at Zambra in Madrid--only Rocío and Dani are better!

¡Como reluce....!

Hope so, I'd die to hear tomatito play straight flamenco the whole show.

They are doing Caracoles, always a little Solea (phygrian Fa Mi) in the verse!

Morante -> RE: Current Tomatito group? (Sep. 8 2016 10:37:12)

Los Caracoles de José Millán.

Leñador -> RE: Current Tomatito group? (Sep. 8 2016 13:29:22)

Great one!!
How did I never know that? I guess I was never formally taught caracoles, I always just kind of filed it in my brain as "less predictable alegrias" haha I'll have to dig in now, I really like that little modulation.

Do any of the major touring groups (other than perhaps Paco Pena's) play "straight flamenco" anymore without trying to add something "cutesy" to their repertoire?

Sure, let me clarify what I mean by "straight flamenco", I really just mean a good proper balance of cante, baile, and guitar, a "tablao style" show.
Farruquito was excellent, Eva Yerba Buena who I saw the night after Tomatito blew my mind(Paco Jarana is my hero), mostly dancers put these shows together, there's a couple more but I can't remember the names right now, I think Israel Galvan and I'm looking forward to Pastora Galvan.
Cigala bored me to death and Amigo as well.

Damn - and I already got tickets.

Oh well...we're going for the sake of seeing Tomatito for the first time.
