The all too over used clip on digital tuner.

Piwin -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Jul. 27 2016 18:43:44)

Just looks like one of those clap-on tuners to me.

It's a little hard to tell, but it might be one of these

or something like it.

Dear all, thanks for the quick replies.

Gosh, I must be decades behind the times. I know what a digital tuner is, using those 9V batteries, but not a digital tuner clip. Videos from Youtube just showed me how they work. It's a wonderful piece of accessory and it seems to cost less than my good old Johnnie Walker black label tuning fork.

Just a matter of interest, which is a good make? I might buy one some day.

I've used a couple fairly regularly, on a variety of classical and flamenco guitars.

The Intellitouch is much bigger, with a larger, brighter display. The Planet Waves is smaller, and could be almost completely hidden behind the headstock.

They work about the same. They are great for tuning up one of your strings within a few cents of concert pitch. If you tune the rest of the strings with the tuner, you can do a little better by ear. By "a little" I mean a very small fraction of a turn of a mechanical tuner-no more than a few cents. Every pro classical player I have seen use a headstock tuner on stage has touched up the tuning by ear, but they might just be sweetening up the tuning for the harmony of the piece they are about to play.

In an environment that's even moderately noisy, I doubt that I could improve much on one of these two digital tuners by ear.

Great advice. I checked out the Snark and the Korg, in the end I ordered a Snark SN-2.

frhout -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Jul. 28 2016 10:10:39)

Thanks. The Snark SN-2 is the one I ordered. The downside is the colour, red, I would have preferred black or dark grey.

frhout -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Jul. 28 2016 13:36:56)

It's actually quite confusing between them. I think there is no mic on the SN-8, but I can figure the difference between the SN-2 and SN-5. The official website is not very resourceful.

DavRom -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Jul. 28 2016 15:54:33)

anyone looking for an alternative should consider the TC Electronic PolyTune app. You can see the tuning for all strings at the same time and it's extremely accurate

Leñador -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Jul. 28 2016 16:49:55)

Interesting......ill give it a try tonight.....

RobJe -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Jul. 28 2016 17:06:46)

I have used a few - and a phone app. Planet Waves beats them all.

Just tried polytune, kind of a nifty idea but cleartune is definitely more sensitive.

sbalderrama -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Aug. 8 2016 18:00:46)

the new polytune clip on is pretty great, very visible and accurate to me.

I like the snarks and have a bunch of them but they break too easy at the head join and I've had some that never fully shut off and drain batteries.

frhout -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Aug. 8 2016 18:13:14)

I bought the Snark Red. This is the first time I tried an electronic one. I like it, but will definitely keep a tuning fork which I can't do without.

Piwin -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Aug. 8 2016 18:57:57)

Now you just have to wait and use it for a few months and see if the laziness creeps in and you end up just leaving it clipped on or not! [;)]

I know I am old school but, I use these flaps on the side of my head....

frhout -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Aug. 9 2016 18:38:18)

I'll check from time to time the tuning with the Snark once I have tuned it by ear and with the tuning fork. This Snark SN-2 is something like a toy for me, something useful when the environment is noisy.

JasonM -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Aug. 14 2016 17:55:38)

I just downloaded Cleartune for the iPhone. Seemed to get the best reviews or at least the most popular. I'm having intonation problems so I needed something accurate. What do you think of it Len?

Funny I'm with Ricardo sort of. I haven't used a tuner in years since my old korg broke 10 years ago lol. I mean most of us that have played guitar for a long time can tune the low E or A string by ear - at least to within a half step I hope. From there I've always tempered tuned to the key I'm playing in.

rob2966 -> RE: What is that thing on Laura Gonzalez's headstock? (Aug. 16 2016 23:20:12)

I use a Snark as well. I find that for the 2-3 weeks after a string change it "lives" on my headstock since I am tuning a lot. Once the strings settle I remove it because it looks way nicer without.

I also have the super small Planet Waves one but I found my new Flamenco guitar headstock was a bit too thick to accommodate it (which is when I got the Snark).

My mama told me this, my teacher, and now Ricardo too.....LOL

If you stop using these flaps you loose slowly the abillity to finetune.....you have to train it back again...
(At least, this is my experiance)

You've got tuning gills Ricardo????[:D]

I really like clear tune , it appears to be the most accurate of all the apps I've tried.

All the pros I have seen using a tuner use it first, then finish fine tuning by ear. Though by no means a pro, that's what I do as well.
