My wife and I traveled to Salamanca, Spain in 1998. My wife was studying Spanish at the university. While walking from the dorms to the campus, I met a gypsy on the street playing guitar, named Jose. I told him in bad Spanish "yo soy guitarista" and he handed me the guitar. After trading the guitar a few times I told him "mi mujer habla espanol" and he gave me his number. My wife and I began going over to his house every day. He gave me lessons which my wife tried to translate for me. We became friends with the whole family. I will have to dig through some boxes for photos and maybe a last name.

Until then, does anyone know of this great musician and if those houses where the gypsies lived are still there. I know that he had other American students.

Welcome to the foro!

Last time I stopped by Salamanca, Rafael de Dios was still busking around the whole Cathedral-plaza de Anaya area.
There was a Jose who gave classes in calle Melendez. He was in his 60s at the time, and wasn't around all that much because he was refurbishing his family home up in Sierra de Bejar, getting ready for retirement. My guess is that he's retired by now and is enjoying the Sierra. Don't know whether this could be the same Jose as the one you met though.
