Seeking inspiration, I watched PDL's Light and Shade DVD again tonight. Referring to classical guitar, he says (my paraphrasing): quote: I would rather play all the notes as written, in rhythm, even poor ones, than stop (the rhythm) to maintain the sound and... quote: Spanish music is about rhythm So duly inspired, I sat down to play afresh and I found three things: I enjoyed it far more by trying to play to the compas than worry about bum notes or poor technique and my technique improved slightly. I tried triplets with p-m-p, p-x-i, p-a-i and p-m-i just for fun and I could sort of do them all. Then I found that my p-x-i improved and that I am much faster with p-m-p. Sort of an exercise (try it). Moving to a new place to practise (sitting on a kitchen worktop) moved me out of my comfort zone, blew away some cobwebs and possibly some bad habits. My two cents.

Simon, since you are interested in experimenting, try something. Play a falseta, or a complete piece if you have one ready, and don't worry about technique at all. In fact, forget about it. Don't think about it at all...if you find technique type thoughts running through your head, viciously destroy them! Just imagine in your head how you want the piece to sound, the melody, the tone, the accents--as vividly as possible. You may feel your fingers start to get a little out of control, a little funky--that's okay, let it go. Then report back and tell me how it sounded!
