turnermoran -> Camaron (w Paco) Solea question (Mar. 24 2016 23:25:12)

Can anyone shed light on the Solea cante Camaron sings on "El Espejo en que tu miras" from their first album?

The melody is quite distinctive and not one I hear much. If ever. But I'm no aficionado in the cante dept

Many thanks in advance

Sounds like Apolá to me

For what it's worth, there are some more specific comments on the cante below this video:

"the last is also apolá , the soleá Paquirri 4 ( apolá )"

Letra

El espejo donde te miras
Te dirá como tú eres
Pero nunca te dirá
Los pensamientos que tienes

Si tu mal no tiene cura
Yo le estoy pidiendo a dios
Que en la misma sepultura
Nos entierren a los dos

Gitana, enciende la luz
Que traigo una borrachera
Que a undibé le hablo de tú

Here's Norman's comment on Paquirri 4: http://canteytoque.es/soleares.htm#paquirri4

"A prominent characteristic of this style are the melodic lines covering a range of an octave and a half (the fifth scale degree is heard at the beginning and throughout). It is similar to Paquirri 2 and el Quino in its breakneck delivery and arrangement of lines of verse, but the melodic descent in these two styles starts at the tonic. The beginning is similar in the style Charamusco, although the next-to-last sung line in Paquirri 4 starts with the same high notes heard in the beginning, and the conclusion of the soleá of Charamusco involves a lower register."

On a side track:
Antonio Mairena Solea de Charamusco

And an hour of other examples.

Not mentioned yet, these are part of the bigger family of Soleares called "Solea de Triana". At least that's how working pros generalize em.
