Admittedly, I have great interest in flamenco playing, however one thing I noticed is that like all things, there comes a point of saturation in what you are doing. Flamenco is quite limitless in its possibilities because of how freeform it is, but still, there are times when I turn to playing other music for enjoyment. That's what flamenco is to me...enjoyment. Because of this, maybe I will never be as good as some of the players who do flamenco exclusively and spend all their time mastering the compas of various palos along with the right hand techiques like alzapua and picado. Of course this could just be temporary, as I am still young [:D] with time, hence I need to experiment as much as possible. So, I am currently spending time on flamenco, classical guitar and fingerstyle bass. I guess I am just addicted to pulling at wires with fingers. I was wondering if anyone out there plays other styles or even other instruments, and how it has helped your flamenco playing. I can say that classical guitar improves my left hand, while all that time pumping those bass strings strengthened my right hand fingers. Just as how flamenco has developed my right hand technique and rhythmic sensibilities for the other things I play.

i play bass,drums,piano,alto saxophone and my first instrument is electric guitar playing heavymetal, later on it becam Jazz. My music is anything between Ravi shankar and Arabe oud music to Metallica,Ac/dc, John coltrane,miles Davis,count Basie to dead kennedys and bad religion and this could go on for a looooong time

I think any music you play develop any other music you do. Now for 6 years i have stayed away from anyother music than flamenco maybe to a 90%. the best way for me to get it is actually listening more than anything else. [:)]

i can tell you, expanding your musical horizons/influences
is a great thing.
It gives you depth you wouldnt otherwise have. Its a big part
of becoming a "musician", and not just "a guitar player".

I play the violin and electric guitar as well as Flamenco. I find that sometimes I just come up with a riff or lick... it might be Flamenco, it might be heavy metal. I feel that it would be a shame to say "No, I'm not going to take that riff and develop it" just because its not a particular type of music. I think you've gotta allow self-expression... whatever form it takes. You might also find that learning musical theory for one instrument helps you out with the others.
On the other hand, learning other instruments has been very challenging for me. I often get confused between violin fingerings and guitar fingerings. And I also found that if you're doing other things with your time (such as working or studying) there simply aren't enough hours in the day to spend as much time as I would like to working on each instrument. There is a saying that says "it is better to do ONE thing very well, than several things not very well". I'm not sure if its completely true, but I guess there is some logic to it.

I play flamenco, rumbas, classical, bossas, and miscellaneous. I also sing, right now mostly Latin American songs. I consider myself a musician not a flamenco. I do think that to become the best at flamenco would require putting in all of your time, though.

By the way, alzapua is not a difficult technique. If you practice it dilligently and stacatto, you will get it a lot faster than picado. I'm not sure that just anyone can easily get and maintain a picado.

I don't think there's any point in me answering your question, I chat with you online practically everyday anyway. [:D]

But still, I agree that it's a great idea to broaden your experiences, even though I've gotten more 'narrow' after starting on guitar. While I'd love to learn how to play the piano and I've had some success learning it previously, I gave up on it simply because the guitar is too much to handle already, even though I know that I can play something decent on the piano in time to come. Flamenco + Classical = A whole load of work.

Anyway, I see that you're enjoying the piece of wood I passed you last week? You're even starting to call it a bass guitar! I've also found out why we're progressing rather slowly, it's because the few of us chat online everyday, minimum 2 hours. Where's the discipline! Someone please wake us up and get us back to full steam (in practising).

I play classic rock, country rock, post-punk...even some folk. I also have formal vocal training, initially for Opera. I think everything you play or practice either makes you better or at least, does no harm. Many good musicians out there play more than a single style of music or multiple instruments, so it can't be a bad thing...

I for one wouldn't want to be in a situation where I will do this one thing for the rest of my life and never do anything else. How horrifying.

I play Octave mandolin with a Northumbrian smallpiper twice a week, I also play piano. I find flamenco so intense that I need regular breaks from it in order to recharge my batteries.
