Nitya -> Duet compositions? (Mar. 8 2016 9:30:30)

apart from Rumba-s it seems to me that flamenco guitar is almost exclusively about solo artists - where there are support guitarists they are very much support, in back ground - as distinct from an equal. I hasten to add that Youtube is almost my only source for this! Does anyone know of scores set compositions for duets for solea for example? Nitya

I don't know about solea, but a good place to start could be Sabicas and Escudero. They recorded quite a few duets together, from granainas to farruca and more.
In a more modern style, there's the Pdl/Manolo Sanlucar sevillanas

But you're right that you'll find more duets in certain palos than in others. I think it has to do with the essence of some of the palos that just makes it more difficult to write a duet compositions without "going out of character".
For instance, solea to me is meant to be very sober and not overwhelmed with ornementation. Hence, a second guitar just might be "too much" to maintain the essence of what a solea is.

Eduardo falu and Paco Peña. They did a cool album together and I think there's a farruca on it.

There's not much out there really bar the obvious/famous ones.
You can make one yourself.. Here is a version myself and my friend Lucas did of Paco's Guajiras. We just added an extra guitar part to it for the fun and fiddled around with a few things.

El Frijolito -> RE: Duet compositions? (Mar. 8 2016 16:49:38)

The duet album by Sabicas and Escudero seems to be the sine qua non of the subgenre, if I may call it such.

These have been documented (i.e. with scores and/or video) in one or two publications.

Still, there are others. Early in Paco de Lucia's career he did a bunch of duet albums with Ramón de Algeciras and Ricardo Modrego but at least a couple of these were pretty commercial.

I think Claude Worms also published some duets in some different palos, in a couple of sets.

Hope this helps...

The ones from Flamenco Styles have. Here they are:

Vol. 1
Vol. 2

The Sabicas and Escudero duets were a huge influence on Lucía & Modrego (and later on Paco & Ramón).

A transcription of the bulería from Fantastic Guitars appeared in the September 2004 edition of Classical Guitar; and of Roja de celos (by Paco & Ramón) in the May 2009 issue.

(One of S & E’s sevillanas appeared in the March 2012 issue, too; but that’s pretty much redundant if you get the David Leiva transcriptions above.)

Andrés Batista also has a book of ensemble pieces; performances of most are on YouTube.

I would also support Pauls opinion that Sabicas and Escudero were probably the best guitar duo of the 20th century.
They definitely had a huge influence Paco and Ramon. In some ways Paco and Ramon technically surpassed Sabicas
and Escudero but had nowhere near the same amount of material. Paco did some of his best Duet work with Juan Carmona
in the mid 60s on a bunch of Eps, notably with Jarrito
In more recent years I heard some Duo guitar work by Manolo Franco and Niño de Pura that is Jaw dropping.
There don't seem to be any commercially available recordings though.

A most excellent emendation. What do you think of the Leiva transcriptions?

In view of M. Faucher’s prices, the Leiva transcriptions seem the better deal, as far as S & E are concerned.

Speaking of Lucía’s duets: Has anyone else got the CD that purports to be by him on the Canadian Kubaney label? (My version is daringly entitled Entre Dos Aguas; but elsewhere it seems to be Los mejores guitarras [sic]).

Anyway, there’s a duet version on it the Habanera from Carmen. Personally, I don’t believe it is Lucía; and a lot more could have been done with the arrangement than is actually the case. But the up-side of this is that it’s very easy, and it also sounds good.

If anybody’s interested, I’ll post a transcription (staff notation only).

P.S The correct attributions seem to be given here. So it looks as if the piece in question is by Rafael Cañizares (double-tracked??)
