http://www.marinij.com/general-news/20160302/flamenco-star-vicente-amigo-makes-rare-trek-to-bay-area

"flamenco fans have been less than pleased by Amigo's far-flung musical sojourns. But he's working on a new project that should assuage them. He'll be including several pieces of cante jondo, or deep song, the stripped down, soul-bearing styles like seguiriyas and tientos featuring only guitar and palmas (hand claps) and some vocals."

"My new recording will be, as the purists who criticize me for doing projects with musicians of other genres would say, a more 'pure' project," Amigo says. "I am very excited about it. There are some styles in flamenco that I hadn't played in previous recordings. I hope fans enjoy it and purists see it as part of what they love so much."

It doesn't say how many Boleros though.

Whoo hoo!

As a tipical "old school" guy ( believe me, I have tried so long to better my live but nothing helped.I am lost.......)
I am really looking forward to this cd!

Thanks for notifying [:D]

Well, that's certainly good to hear. Has anyone heard of a tentative release date?

I hope people realize he probably WON'T be playing Sabicas falsetas. [8|]

Definitely not :) But it'd be nice to hear a player of Vicente's stature re-discovering more obscure palos of which we have very few (solo) examples.

Que ni pintao!

Leñador -> RE: Vicente Amigo- Is Going back to the roots (Mar. 4 2016 15:08:47)

Nice! Last time I saw him live I was surprised how traditional everything was. Only a couple solos, a lot of cante and even baile. Gunna see him here in a few weeks, can't wait!

My guess is that Pacos passing might of had some heavy influence on this album. maybe. Because in an older interview about his latest album Tierra, he sort of indicated that he wanted to explore other genres some more on his next album, which the record company was already pushing him along on. And we know he is a very self reflective person. But whatever the reason if any, I agree there could be some gems on it, like his farruca, they were falsetas he said he had around for a long time before we heard them.

Yeah Len, seeing him this Sunday!

I saw him in London the weekend before last and he was fantastic. The set listed in the programme included a reasonable amount of more recent material (noted as being subject to change depending on his mood/inspiration), and in fact he deviated from it substantially. The set he played was a lot more traditional, and included material from Vivencias Imaginadas - which is probably my favourite album of his so far. The high point was a stonking bulerias with El Choro doing some great zapateado work which brought the house down.

(P.S. a heads-up for anyone similarly averse to bass solos: the gig did also unfortunately include a couple of fusion-style interludes from his bassist. Personally I'm not sure bass solo + flamenco can ever be a good idea!!)

I saw a recent live video on youtube and I was under the impression that the bass player didn't knew the songs well.

Is it a new bass player?

julianev -> RE: Vicente Amigo- Is Going back to the roots (Mar. 4 2016 16:25:27)

Yes I think it was Ewan Vernal from Capercaillie, i.e. the Tierra celtic connection. My guess is the world of flamenco is relatively new to him.

I liked the bassist, and harmonica solos Paco had on his last tours. Maybe not mind blowing, but a nice contrast break.

Despite Vicente's more easy listening album, most will agree (except maybe Bill ;)), that he is a killer guitarist, especially live. And I respect his interest and agree with him that the purist can shut it. But that doesn't stop me from wishing for more stuff like His early albums. I know he has a lot of amazing material we haven't heard.

Que ni pintao. What does that expression mean? Is it like "written in stone ", or some other expression.

I meant "Couldn't get better" but maybe it means "Paint my knee" or something.. [:D]

Grisha -> RE: Vicente Amigo- Is Going back to the roots (Mar. 4 2016 17:48:48)

That is great news. I never listened to Tierra because that stuff is not my cup of tea presently. Him releasing a more traditional album is something I've been hoping for since his 2005 album came out.

Considering seeing him in concert tomorrow.

Sr. Martins -> RE: Vicente Amigo- Is Going back to the roots (Mar. 4 2016 18:09:49)

He never plays Laura live, does he?

It's a shame since that was a clear highlight in the Tierra show.

julianev -> RE: Vicente Amigo- Is Going back to the roots (Mar. 4 2016 18:29:27)

Agreed - I think anyone that amazing has fully earnt the right to do exactly whatever they want!

It was the first time I have seen him live. What struck me even more than his devastating technique was how awesomely groovy and funky his playing is. The most impressive accompaniest I have ever seen previously was Paco Jarana playing for Eva Yerbabuena, but this was insane.

My dream gig would be a duo performance of him with a dancer like Sara Baras. Given the vast numbers of people who pay a fortune to go and see plastic musicals, I can't understand how two such true artists at the top of their game wouldn't be anything but the entertainment sensation of the year. But then again there's a lot I don't understand I guess [:)] ...

Agreed, Paco Jarana blew my mind! The only word I kept thinking was "perfect, focking perfect."

JasonM -> RE: Vicente Amigo- Is Going back to the roots (Mar. 4 2016 22:18:25)

I'll have to check him out. Always Looking for some good material for dance class.

tele -> RE: Vicente Amigo- Is Going back to the roots (Mar. 4 2016 22:40:01)

Speaking of Jarana:

Pretty impressive[8D]
