Cervantes -> Does a cut away degrade sound quality? (Feb. 3 2016 16:44:43)

My blanca that I bought a few years ago has a cut away. At the time I didn't care because I was a beginner and got a good deal on a nice new guitar from a local builder that I know. Now I am getting the itch to upgrade I wonder if not having a cut away will result in better sound? I don't see many cut aways being used by serious players.

Seems like the answer is it doesn't have much affect.
I do like the traditional look without it though and I don't need to play those really high frets. Most guitars I would consider don't have it anyway.

Cervantes, the conclusion that a cut-away does not affect the sound is most likely based on a full body converted into a cut-away. Many cut-aways on the market are often thinner and that will affect the sound. The neck width at the nut on many is often less than 52mm.

Keith,

I think you are referring to what are called "cross over" guitars. Mine is 52mm and the builder calls it his Santos Hernandez model so I think it is built as a pure flamenco.
