constructordeguitarras -> A factory/hand method (Dec. 30 2015 2:47:44)

There are a lot of videos on Youtube about guitar making. I found this one interesting. It is about some of the methods used by a factory. The number of work stations says factory. But they are hand methods. The method of installing binding and purfling in one shot is shown. I saw something similar in a video from the Ramirez workshop. Here I was amazed that work with glue was done on a surface covered in sawdust from routing. What a mess that could make in unskilled hands. The way I do it is by pre-bending bindings. These must be thinner--several layers of veneer? Has anyone done it this way?

A treat is that Paco del Gastor tries out one of their guitars at the end.

That is the typical Spanish Small factory approach.
Its very close to to artesan lutherie.
BUT!!! the big difference is what matters the most, the attention to details.
They go through the building of a guitar very fast and work on MANY at a time, meaning they loose control of the particalar need of each instrument.
The final result is obvious: lack of consistancy. I´ve tried many Bernal guitars and they vary a lot. Bernal guitars make a lot of different models at different prices and the expensive ones dont necessarily have to be the good ones.

Good observations, Anders. I was thinking the same things and assuming they are obvious, but of course they are not obvious to everyone here.

It was good to see Paco Del Gastor there, as he taught me a lot of Gitano style music to prepare for my professional career.

That was in 1965. And I was playing a lot of Sabicas' music at that time.

I'm sure you know Charles Fox. His shop is about the same type but A LOT CLEANER.

Ethan, I have learnt that nothing in the world is obvious. [8D]

it was pretty weird to see a bunch of metal clamps inside the guitar as it seems the bottom layer of clamps could put dents into the top

I thought so too. And the way the work was done so fast. Not surprising that the quality is inconsistent.

Just to be clear, I don't think that Anders was referring to cosmetic consistency.
