This is just one example, among many, of the downside of the internet and social media and their effect across the board: music, opinions, so-called "news," and above all "commentary." Before the advent of the internet and social media, the outlets for music, news, and commentary may have been much more restrictive, but they served as a filter that more or less separated the wheat from the chaff. In today's world there is no filter. There is no discerning authority determining what is legitimate and what is not. Anything goes. Today, any fool can start his own blog and is read by many who have no idea whether he has something useful to contribute to the subject or not. Blogs, tweets, and all manner of social media permeate the ether, and the problem is that so many no longer read in-depth news and commentary; they just settle for small bites on the internet and other media without having the depth required to analyze whether what they are reading has any substance or not. I would wager the same holds true for music. Yes, yes, I know. Everyone has a right to express an opinion on anything, whether knowledgeable or not. But when everyone expresses an opinion through blogs, tweets, and the wonders of social media, we should not be surprised when much of what passes for "insight" is simply the triumph of the lowest common denominator.
