por medio -> Hiss out of my powered speaker (Oct. 22 2015 21:57:02)

I've got a powered speaker that I have used for a couple of years now for gigs, and for whatever reason I was playing around with it in the living room the other day.

I hadn't used it in my living room probably since the very first time I bought it.

What I noticed was that there is a fair bit of "hiss" whenever the sound comes through (i.e. when I play), then this hiss disappears when there's no signal. I had never noticed this in the past but on the occasions when I had used in gigs the space is a lot bigger (and noisier) than my living room so I seriously doubt that I would've notice the hiss if it had been there all along. The hiss is not dependent on the volume so if I play loud the sound of music kind of takes over anyway, but is certainly noticeable when I play softer.

I'm taking it to the shop to have a check next week but I thought I would ask here first since I'm really curious... Any ideas? Is this actually normal? Surely not... I'm not very experienced in different speakers. It's a Warfdale Titan. Thanks heaps. And no, the hiss is exactly the same regardless of preamp/mic/cables/parameters.

sound like a compressor or limiter problem , to me , if it has one ... acting like a noise gate .. so when you dont play it cuts off the frequencies but when you do it opens and lets through some unwanted HF ..

this is just a guess though

I've tinkered around with building speakers and amps in the past and I'm no expert, but If you've verified that it is indeed the speaker, then it could be the power supply For the amplifier contained within. Capacitors are common suspects in anything electronic, and in audio they are very important for filtering out noise. DSP like kiko said is possible. If it were mine I would open it up and peak around. It could even be something that jostled loose from all the moving around.
