I'm just curious to what you all think about playing solea in a libre style. It's definately for solo playing and i find i go from compas to libre because of the expression and feeling i want to put into the piece. Do you think this is just wrong and i'm a bad boy or do you agree. I understand that in any other context (ie with singers & dancers) that compas is essential, and that's fine but in a solo context....????
Just curious[8|]

I think it sucks. :) just kidding man. Aesthetics is a type of taste after all. Probably the only difference between a libre solea and a libre rondena is the expectation and traditions already in place.

I think most people who have been into flamenco for awhile will gravitate towards compas for all the danceable palos. I was just listening to an old solea of mine (It's actually uploaded ont his site I think), and the thing that bothered me the most about it was rhythmic inconsistency. It's like the screeching chalk on a blackboard thing.

IMO, yuk.

When you start saying 'absolutely anything goes' then flamenco loses its character, it soul, and its interest for me. Compas is the heart of 'toque a compas'.

I love the modern players stuff, but even in, say, Vicente's solea I can hear the compas. I think tempo changes and 'stretching the compas' occasionally is OK, after all that seems to happen in the Cante, but I think it takes a lot of skill and knowledge to pull this off tastefully.

But a Solea played libre? Would sound like someone noddling something Spanishy, IMO.

I guess you mean with the tempo moving alot, not totally free like Granainas right? Yeah I love that for the falsetas between letras, and of course for a solo. Same with siguiriyas. But it has to be done with taste, and only if you CAN play it all or learned it really square and steady. I dont' know why or how this is achieved exactly but I can tell when I hear a "loose" tempo if it is deliberate or not. I also love the solid slow groove for baile, very tough not to rush. Makes me sweat more than playing a quick bulerias. I really put a lot into playing certain falsetas of solea when they are slow yet need to be tight and steady with the palmas. It is hard to be expressive that way sometimes, but it is just a different type of expression, that is all. It is cool that flamenco has that dynamic.

Segovia is not my favorite player for sure, but he said something very interesting once:"It is in the delicate lack of respect for the rhythm (tempo I think), that one defines the good artist and the bad artist", or something like that.

I dont' think it is good to learn solea or any other palo with compas, "libre" or with a not steady tempo, in the beginning. You can't stretch the rhythm properly, if you don't have tempo to begin with.

Yes, thats almost word for word on the Segovia quote.

I agree.

Like you say, you have to learn it the right way, and have it solid first.

Its a different thing entirely to decide to skip studying the compas,
and just play free cause you dont feel like putting the work in.
There are those that do that.

Fine to do at home. But i wouldnt break it out at a concert, with
afficianados near by. :)

...or at least not under "Flamenco" label...there seem to be a bunch of failed flamenco students out there who play "spanish" or "gypsy" stuff.[;)]
