bump - anyone know anything about this album?

I see it has minera listed - I don't have any recording of Sabicas playing solo Minera - also siguiriyas en re - another thing I don't have of Sabicas - looks like an interesting album, I'd like to hear it.

it's probably against forum rules (and also illegal) to offer to trade something for it, so obviously that's out of the question.... crazy that it doesn't seem to be available on CD or as mp3 download.

any information you can always pm me....

Hmm. I don't see a Minera on my copy. Here is the track listing I have, and the cover. (I saw a list once of ugliest album covers, and this won.)

Llanto A Linares is played in G# making it a mineras as far as I know. Tabs available from Alain Faucher.

I saw the LP reviewed on Amazon.com by Paul Magnussen (member here) and he listed that track as Minera

thanks, but Amazon.com is where I saw the listing for the LP, and I couldn't find a CD or MP3 available there (or anywhere else)

I haven’t got the LP here; but I do indeed have Llanto a Linares listed as a minera, and also on the anthology Sixteen Immortal Performances. That’s the way it’s listed by Alain Faucher, too.

There are a couple of expensive copies on Amazon UK; but there’s also one on Amazon US for $3.99, it explicitly says stereo and very good condition, and they’ll ship internationally.

That’s not the only one: I read that the whole ABC-Paramount catalogue is moribund, and the tapes are reportedly in bad shape. Some have made it to MP3:

do you have, or do you know of, a comprehensive discography of Sabicas with track lists and LP covers? I guess I could trawl through Amazon Discogs and try to compile it myself, but if someone else has already done it would save me a lot of practise time!

Oops. I searched the Amazon US albums, but forgot to do the same in the UK — even though I’d already said Solo Flamenco was UK-only!

The keyword is comprehensive. That would have to to back to the 78s he made in Spain with various singers. You’re probably aware of the excellent compilation of those, Al compás de mi guitarra.

So the short answer is No. A wasted opportunity was Amazon’s SoundUnwound®, which I contributed a great deal of time and effort to, and which they then pulled the plug on.

I have one myself I’ve bodged together over the years, FWIW, although it doesn't include covers. I’ll post it next time.

more interested in just a round up of his albums, but maybe taking into account of all those endless re-issues with different names etc. to help me navigate the CD and MP3 albums that are available (I have about 10)

I don't know if anyone else recorded Minera or used G# accompanying between Ramon Montoya and Sabicas (I think Sabicas used it accompanying Carmen Amaya in Tarantos, listed as Rondeña), but I guess this Sabicas Minera is like a "link" between Ramon Montoya and Paco de Lucía (who picked up the ball and ran with it!)

The Siguiriya in D is interesting 'cos I don't know of anyone using this key for this palo, or other phrygian palos, until the 80's (PDL por tangos) or 90's (Gerardo por bulerías and por tangos, Miguel Angel Cortes por Siguiriyas)

Someone more knowledgeable may correct me; but I gather that taranta and minera are, or at least were at one time, used interchangeably by singers (indifferent to the niceties of guitarists) to mean the same thing.

Perhaps the distinction begins, in fact, with Montoya.

I have a recording of Antonio Piñana (1913-1989) from 1972. He is regarded as the patriarca of cante minera.

He has distinct cantes of taranta and minera.

just in terms of the guitar, "por tarantas" usually means F# Phrygian, and "por mineras" G# Phrygian.

don't know if R. Montoya was the first to transpose F# phrygian tarantas toque libre a tone higher to G# phrygian, but it's the earliest recording I have.

Certainly. But, collectively, are they not referred to as the cantes mineras?

However, my experience is that if you ask six Spaniards the same question about Flamenco, you’ll get six different answers.

None the less, I believe Montoya was indeed, supposedly, the first, as with so many things.
