I had a guitar I played from 1998 until 2010 and it had a piece of tap plate I added to protect more on the treble side near the waist. I cut a piece of clear mylar .012" thick, put some thinned white glue on it and pressed it over the spot. I tapped in place and used a rubber eraser to knead the excess glue out from under the mylar. The white glue does not damage the top an can be removed later with a careful wipe of warm water. It comes right off. It also fills the dents and makes the surface of the guitar look clean. One caveat, if the finish has been broken through nothing you put on the top will really look the same as the finish and dirt can get in the dents to the bare wood very easily. Which is why I say just place a swatch of self adhesive tap plate over it and get on with playing. Really at this point I think ( and others) conserving what finish is there is better in the bigger view than trying to hide dents.
