El Muniqués -> flamenco accompaniment course starting this autumn in Andalucia (Aug. 9 2015 18:03:07)

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum so I'd like to introduce myself briefly. I'm a 22 year old aficionado from Germany, I'm playing the guitar for 10 years and got into flamenco about one year ago. I spent a few months in Granada to have private lessons with 2 teachers there. I pretty much enjoyed entering this new world of music but also soon realized it's not about learning as many impressing falsetas for nice solo playing. So I decided I'd like to go back to Andalucía this autumn and enroll in some flamenco school that offers courses on accompaniment of cante and baile.

Unfortunately my budget is somewhat limited, I wouldn't like to pay more than 100€ per month. Then again, I would be okay with just a few hours per week as I will work on my own a lot, too.

So here's what I found so far:

Escuela Municipal de Flamenco de Granada - they offer 2 hours of guitar lesson and - depending on your level - 1 or 2 hours of accompaniment courses per week for 40€.

Contradanza Granada - offers a course by José Cortés "El Pirata", it's 45€ but seems to be only 1,5h per week.

Fundacion Cristina Heeren Sevilla: they have afternoon flamenco courses but I'm not sure if accompaniment is thaught as well, also it's quiete expensive with 100€ per month.

So if anybody could give an opinion about these institutions or add more I'd be deeply grateful :)

Saludos!

I've heard about the Fundacion Cristina Heeren in Sevilla but I was told the courses last the whole year. Pedro Sierra teaches there, enough said. And Niño de Pura too.

Ask at the Taller Flamenco, Sevilla. I know they offer accompaniment classes.
Jose Carlos, the manager, speaks excellent German, and is very helpful and friendly.

Yeah there is the annual course at Cristina Heeren going from October to June. Thing is, it costs 3400€. Here's the description from their homepage:

quote:

The objective of the annual guitar course is to train the student to accompany singing as well as dancing. Classes are given in small groups that encourage rapid progress in all the areas of flamenco guitar playing. With more than 900 hours in 9 months, each class works out to little more than 4 euros!!
The overall lesson plan is three years long, divided into one academic year (October through June) at each level, basic, intermediate and advanced. Each academic year or annual course has a different level and each level has a different objective. Students will receive a diploma certifying their final grade for each one of the annual courses and levels that they complete. Students that do not complete the course, or pass all tests do not receive a diploma, but can be given a certificate that certifies the time that they have been studying at the foundation as well as their grades.

Sounds fine but do you think it's worth that much money?

I heard about Taller Flamenco, too, but it seems like more of a short-stay combined flamenco/spanish school to me? I mean it's 600€ per month... My spanish is not the problem [:D]

No opinions about Escuela Municipal de Flamenco in Granada, anyone? [:)]

No problem if Spanish isn't the problem [:D]
The taller caters to all needs ...
I'm sure they can offer you something or help.

I know a dancer that goes to the escuela municipal in Granada every year and loves it, she's gone like 7 years in a row now. She's showed me some videos and the student guitar players seem to be pretty on point. I personally can't speak to their teaching though. Just what I've heard.

There seems to be a similar set up at this school in Granada

it has had good reviews on the foro before and judging from the photos on the website it looks like a gorgeous place to hang out.

I'm pretty much into the same interrogations and am very happy you posted this!

I have friends who have studied at the Christina Heeren Fondation and they really enjoyed it, it's pretty intense like 5 hours of classes/day with a lot of work to do [so it's not that expensive if you divide the price by the hours of classes], and it's focused on accompaniment. But.. the classes are not individual. The good thing is you meet tons of people loving flamenco and you can play with them outside the school. Teachers are great, Pedro Sierra, Nino de Pura, and this year there was also Rafael Riqueni!!!

From what i saw there was a great ambient and everybody was very happy. Anyway you have to stay minimum 1 semester there.

Hi Paulo,

I wrote to the Fundación yesterday and could get some more information. The afternoon classes I mentioned earlier will start in October and be held by Paco Cortés. They will last 1,5h from monday through thursday at 4 o' clock in the afternoon and cost 100€ per month. I will now ask whether they're about accompaniment or purely solo technique and let you know here once I know.

What about the general living costs in Seville? In Granada I could easily find a room in a shared flat for under 200€, also there was lots of free concerts, movies and other activities. Is it like that in Seville or should I calculate more expenses on that, too?

It's a pity there's only these two options there... I'd be really happy with 3h per day and paying 2k or something like that.

Thanks for the information! I was planning to do the fondation for a year, then i budgetized it and know i'm wondering if i cannot find a cheaper way without sacrifying the intensity of the formation...
