Not so timely but interesting question... My opinion is one of seeming minority... Many new instruments are compensated in the flat direction ... Many old Spanish guitars are not. Idea being old guitars will play sharp as you go up the scale if casually fretted.... To the point we often see old vintage master guitars being reworked ie re fretted with compensation to match the modern trends.
As you noted it might seem "impossible" to fret a guitar perfectly in tune .... But my minority opinion is that that is ok because fretting a note is a technique to be mastered after all. Vibrato is the exaggerated version that shows how fretting a note allows for pitch variation... So why blame a guitar? Playing in tune is relative and needs to be learned with the ear involved ... Not just casual finger placement between the fret wires.
