JohnWalshGuitar -> Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 11 2015 17:15:02)

Anyone know what this strange news about Rafael Riqueni is about? Check his facebook page to see. Hopefully some silly mistake or something

tijeretamiel -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 11 2015 17:21:31)

He's in prison?

Wow.

Estevan -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 11 2015 18:24:15)

Seems to be true - weird, and so sad after all he's been through.

Rafael Riqueni ingresa en prisión

As on the Facebook page, it just says that it's something to do with events in the past, and that the reason will be announced on Monday.

Grisha -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 11 2015 18:26:49)

I saw it too. Anybody knows the charge/sentence length?

JohnWalshGuitar -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 11 2015 19:29:03)

It's sad. He has had a hard time obviously in recent years. These 'events in the past'.. I hope it's nothing too serious. It's sad really. He had just made a bit of a comeback

gj Michelob -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 11 2015 19:40:23)

Well, at this time his agent is not disclosing the nature of the crime RR committed (in 2010) nor the the length of the prison term.

"El representante del músico no ha querido desvelar ni los hechos que han desembocado en este ingreso en prisión, ni la duración de la pena a la que Rafael Riqueni se enfrenta. "Tenemos que hablar todavía con nuestro abogado y quizás no sería conveniente", afirmó Bech, que se muestra no obstante esperanzado sobre la suerte inmediata del artista."

He seems, prima facie, unlikely to have been mugging old ladies; so my guess would be something to do with his income tax.

Nothing makes the authorities (anywhere) foam at the mouth so much as the concept that someone might not have paid the taxman the maximum possible fraction of his income.

He needs to give Leo Messi a call then....

I think it's more likely to do something with drugs...

What kind of judge would put a famous musician behind bars?

Plenty would. See list below of famous musicians who reportedly served hard time.

--Chuck Berry for violating the Mann Act, which prohibits pimping and "white slavery."

--Merle Haggard for armed robbery.

--Ike Turner (of Ike and Tina Turner) on drug and weapons charges.

--David Crosby on drug and weapons charges.

--Johnny Paycheck ("Take this Job and Shove It") for shooting at some guy and skimming his head, allegedly over a card game.

There may be others, but it's not so unusual.

I don't understand the logic here, didn't know a guitar was a free pass over jail.

rodrigovalt -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 12 2015 18:15:31)

Those are terrible news, very very sad. He has to serve 14 months. Apparently he is in good condition and already has a guitar in there.

I just saw it here (it's in Spanish)

I read the article through the meat grinder that is Google Translate, and it's difficult to get an understanding of the situation.

It seems like he has had some mental health issues (bipolar) and I hope he has been sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment instead of a straight up prison/jail which would be likely to be detrimental to his psychological well being. The fact that the article says he is able to have a guitar with him seems to be reassuring though.

Wish the Rafael the best.

Estevan -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 12 2015 19:17:36)

That's it, he went through some very difficult times and that's why he was not performing for quite a long time. Eventually he found some helpful treatment and had made a comeback in the last couple of years.

The jail term is the result of a violent incident that took place in 2010 when he was in a very bad state, and it says that he is required to serve the 14 months because he 'had a record' (a criminal one, that is), so obviously it was not the first time something like that had happened.

As rodrigovalt mentioned, he is allowed to have a guitar and his medical treatment will continue.

Obviously, being in prison is a bad thing. That said, if you're a guitarist at heart, as he is, then being able to have a guitar while in prison (!) can make all the difference in the world.

Ricardo -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 13 2015 19:10:19)

What I read earlier was 14 months because of a felony assault charge from 2010. Now, everybody understands he had a rough time in the past and hearing this is a bummer cuz we see a fellow artist turning his life around and on the rise....but we don't really know what happened.

My understanding for many years now (from gossiping flamingos) was that he lost his son back 90's, heavy drugs and alcohol resulted in his down spiral to point his friends located him home alone scribbling stacks and stacks of music wearing a powdered wig (completely insane thought he was Mozart ). He disappeared for years supposedly rehabilitating, a student of mine saw him walking with a chaperone in sevilla and was informed he was not allowed "out" without one. That was long before this 2010 incident. Optimistic as I want to be about his future, it looks as if his past is catching up to him now, and has to pay the price for something he did and insanity plea can't get him out of. I pray he gets out early on good behavior to continue his comeback in peace.

But I'm speculating so time will tell

Fisch -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 14 2015 4:49:54)

It was only a month ago that I was talking to Rafael and he seemed to be in high spirits. He loves to show off (and rightly so) at the Cristina Heeren Foundation.

If anyone finds out more information could you please post an update on my blog. http://www.theflamencogypsy.com/2015/07/rafael-riqueni-is-in-prison/

All us past students are waiting for a solid answer.

Arash -> RE: Rafael Riqueni????? (Jul. 15 2015 6:34:02)

Just let him to take his guitar to prison, enough strings and the permission to play whenever he wants, so that he can play and compose during these 14 months. He can't change the situation, so best would be to look at this as an opportunity of solitude and self reflection which might lead to new great compositions and a fresh new start after prison.

I read an interview recently online (maybe at deflamenco.com) - the introduction said: "He says that being out of the loop for fifteen years, fighting off the demons that came with his progenitor's suicide and the psychiatric hospitals never diminished his love for guitar"

and further down: "Let's talk about those hard times.  What's it like to return to performing after fifteen years down time?
It's hard, but I have to say I'm living in a period full of grace, and it makes everything easier.  When my father took his life, it was very difficult for me, I went from one psychiatric ward to another, and was living like in limbo.  I didn't stop working, but I couldn't concentrate or record, and certainly not create anything new."

EDIT: the source article is here; http://www.deflamenco.com/revista/entrevistas/interview-with-guitarist-rafael-riqueni-1.html

i never heard of this ...just reading in the spanish press now ...
he has 14 months in jail for an 'agressive crime 'commited in 2010 even though at the time it was proved to have been suffering from a Bipolar disorder ..
also it sounds like they will let him out to play gigs already arranged , and he can have a guitar in the prison to practice..'
in October he was hopint to get a neew album out called'' Parque de María Luisa''
etc etc ....
