I'll be flying with Easyjet and Flybe later this summer.

My impression of Flybe is that they jump at any chance they can to fine you for some nonsense (like not printing boarding cards before arriving at the airport) - I fear the worst about just turning up with a guitar on my back.

If anyone here has flown with guitars on Easyjet or Flybe I'd really appreciate learning how pleasant / unpleasant the experience was.

Ryanair made me purchase a seat for guitar, could be same with easyjet, call them?

In the end usually these budget airlines don't usually cost that much less considering their additional fees and possible problems

Ryanair is a total disaster area in every way.

But I've always found Easyjet helpful. They may let you put the guitar in an overhead locker (yes they do fit even with a bulky Pod type case) or the steward may take care of it for you.
That's if you're lucky and the flight is not too full.
But I would be prepared for the guitar to go in the hold, so be sure to use a Pod case or hard case. Don't rely on a bag however well padded.

Yep.
Had my bagged travel guitar in the overhead compartment and passengers after me would put their heavy cases on top of it without flinching.
Made me get up and re-arrange.

Thanks guys. I had a look at the Flybe site. It was a bit cryptic, but I got the impression they might charge me 40 quid to carry the guitar on. Anyone come across this?

I think there was a post on the foro last year linking to new regulations according to which airlines in the US will generally allow guitars in the cabine. ... At least with big planes, I assume.

Don't rely on overhead lockers, these days they're crammed to capacity even on traditional airlines.

my travel solution:- Hiscox liteflite case, bottom of the range Valeriano Bernal Prodigio guitar - throw it in the hold and don't worry about it[:)]

Why not buy a cheap guitar on arrival (100-150€) and give it to some kid on leaving?

When I bought my guitar in Almería, it was in a very ordinary case. I managed to carry it on for the trip to England, but the next stage to Ireland was in a small plane and it had to go in the hold. My heart was in my mouth when I opened the case but everything was ok. When I brought it back to Spain, in a good case, I vowed never to travel with it again.

I know professionals who take a cheaper guitar when they go to Japan, leaving their best at home. Often they sell the cheapie in Japan.
