Escribano -> my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (May 25 2015 18:24:34)

Remember I bought a couple of guitars in bits a while back for £200? Well, I have nearly finished sorting them out. The one on the left in the photo is called El Bastardo and the other La Perra, because one is a mongrel and the other was a bitch to repair. She still needs some fettling but the only extra money I spent was on a couple of new steel block tremolos, orange drop caps and I will need a new volume pot for La Perra.

The sound and action is getting there; the original setup was unworkable, the top E was actually off the fingerboard! Lots of drilling, straightening, filing and rewiring.

I include a video of El Bastardo. Trying a Stevie Ray backing track and working the bottom strings some more.

its got a tone somewhere between Dave Gilmore and BB King ..depending on what you do ...

I'm jealous , I used to love fixing up old electrics , usually from a second hand shop or some friend that was to throw one out ...I havent done one for ages .. but its great satisfaction to turn and end of life guitar into a new thing

Even worse, these were all new parts, never been assembled properly therefore never played. So extra special to me. You should try it again sometime, it's very relaxing and rewarding. It's not like we can unbolt our flamenco and swap stuff out (apart from the strings, saddle, nut, golpeador and tuners). [:D]

tele -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (May 25 2015 20:38:44)

Nice guitars, very custom look. White pickguard would look better on the left one and white knobs(for tradition)[;)] Tin pan alley is very difficult to improvise to, you did well[:)]

Long live el bastardo!

I will have another look in my parts bin for white knobs, but I like the pearl pickguard and don't want to spend out on another at the moment.

La Perra is going to need a shim under the bridge plate to get anywhere near the right set-up. Lordy knows what the previous owner got up to.

SephardRick -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 10 2015 13:52:25)

Nice job!

I prefer the pearl pickguards too. I remember when I first saw a G&L guitar. They "looked" more expensive than Fenders at the time. It was because of the metal knobs and pearl pickguards. So, I studied G&L hardware designs and upgraded my Fender to look like G&L's according. So, I like your guitars a lot.

El Kiko,

This is an "Off Topic" Discussion. In case you missed the header above.

El Kiko -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 10 2015 20:35:58)

i know , my reply is off topic as well . , and yet ...........

i wonder if there is an off topic forum ..
dedicated to those who are always off topic .. and how would you know, if there was no topic ?

you would just have to talk about anything that hasn't been previously mentioned ..

Well pata negra mixed blues and flamenco...

...Didn't like it
[:)]

I wonder if Raimundo Amador is still playing the blues. He got really far with it for a Spaniard, he even played with BB King.

El Kiko -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 10 2015 22:27:19)

thats was actually where i nicked my little blues riff thingy from ..
some of pata negra is ok ,, it up beat and fun .. you have to put it in context with what it is ...

estebanana -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 11 2015 2:37:11)

I like the blues updates, even though I don't add any comments, I'm following along. I like the diversity of other subjects the off Topic section gives. Many of us have lot's of interests and view points (and while I don't always agree with them on some topics) I like that they get aired.

If I had enough time I would like to get into electric playing by learning to build electrics and play Surf Guitar licks, but I just don't have enough time in one life. I enjoy Simon's blues investigations because I can live my electric guitar life vicariously!

Anders Eliasson -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 11 2015 10:46:20)

El bastardo y la perra. ¡Vaya pareja de chulitos pintados y con adornos de naca plastificada!

Vey good. Your timing is getting good.[;)]

I think the right car to go with these 2 sweeties would be this one:

Ha!

As I recall Anders...Wasn't your dad a big Opel guy?

Anders Eliasson -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 14 2015 9:37:53)

My dad was an Opel guy, but I think these 2 sweeties deserve a classic Datsun.

Ah! So, those are Datsuns, not Opels.

I can see where you are coming from, Anders [:'(] Thanks for the critical support. I haven't given up yet.

Why give up when you have some serious talent considering how late you started playing the blues?[;)]

usually when I see youtube random blues aficionados, I have to close the vids quickly because they sound almost disrespectful toward the art[:)]

Thank you, it really helps to get such feedback. I'll probably never give up noodling to myself but the search for a band is getting very tiresome. The last guy had some potential but wanted HIS band to dress up as escapees from an asylum with white-painted faces [:'(]

My latest contact sends no discography, audio or video but does says:

quote:

I am a good guitarist (some say very good) and have lots of experience...have hung out with Mark Knopfler and of course Eric Clapton (his keyboard player Alan Clark is a mate of mine) and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy!

Sigh....

I do know a fledgling drummer up the road and I can play bass, so maybe we can multitrack for now.

tele -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 15 2015 12:01:43)

I have also thought about looking for a band, instead I am now thinking about getting some loudspeakers to play youtube backing tracks, as I know they'll play perfect and I don't want to play gigs at least now. Now I'm in the process of acquiring an amp and some other gear after a while playing mostly flamenco guitar. I have already agreed on a purchase of vintage marshall smallbox 50w, can't wait to blast it up.

Is it my fault? [;)]

Good idea, I have been doing that for over a year and there are some very good backing tracks out there. There are also some decent subscription karaoke online web sites where you can switch instruments and vocals in and out.

But I learned a lot from playing with others, especially important for compositional efforts, of course.

Simon, I wrote "Vey good. Your timing is getting good. [;)]" And as always, I meant what I wrote. So please go on. I can feel it when you play.
The Datsun is because the guitars reminded me of it. I really like old Datsuns. Thats what turned my head when I was a kid and they still do. They have this late 60th early 70th mini copy of an american musclecar look. I can see you heading for the next blues gig with el bastardo y la perra on the backseat. Cool style.

Escribano -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 15 2015 15:03:19)

I know Anders, and I appreciate it - you always call a spade a spade, etc. [;)] You know I am a sucker for 60s/early 70s car design myself. Pick up my new car on Thursday, but this time it is a twin turbo BMW monster.

I will probably keep El Bastardo but sell his slutty sister. Can't justify so many guitars.

tele -> RE: my journey into the blues #11 - guitar rescue (Jun. 15 2015 17:05:22)

I've just used to own vintage marshall heads in the past and had to get one, and I thought I would just buy the head and lay it around, but as a fool for guitar gear I have already acquired a vintage marshall cab, professional earplugs and vintage boss overdrive pedal. I just hope I get around to find a place where to play as soon as I pay for the head. Youtube backing tracks(especially) and lessons are very good for blues practice.

Backing tracks--reminds me of an anecdote even further off topic.

My ex-wife went to college on a classical piano scholarship. I have been obsessed with music since childhood, but my son showed outstanding talent by age four, outclassing us both. With no instruction, he would sit at the piano and accurately reproduce whatever he heard.

By age 16 he was a proficient blues and rock guitarist--but he could play just about anything. I was out of the country on business when a couple, among my oldest and best friends visited Austin. They stayed at our house. When I got back my wife told me our son and Pat had been jamming quite a bit.

Pat is a talented guitarist and song writer. He composed and recorded the sound tracks for a couple of National Geographic specials that won awards.

Pat is a very accomplished improvisor. After I got back in town we went to hear a local singer-songwriter. Pat had taught him to play guitar. At the break the singer-songwriter came to our table and insisted we go home (nearby) and get our guitars.

During the few years after Pat left Austin the the singer-songwriter's harmonic vocabulary had expanded quite considerably. He brought Pat and me up on stage and introduced Pat as his guitar teacher. He said Pat had never heard any of the songs in the next set. I wondered how it was going to go. The singer-songwriter turned away so we couldn't see what chords he was playing. Pat correctly anticipated every harmonic nuance, and played really good licks between verses. I watched what Pat was doing and kept carefully in the background. I had never seen anything like what Pat did that evening.

My son was too young to go to the club to hear the performance. He had never heard Pat before they jammed at the house. I asked him what he thought of Pat's guitar playing.

My son paused, then said, "He's a pretty good blues rhythm player..."

I broke out laughing. My son asked, "What's so funny?" I dug out the tape of one of the TV shows. "That's Pat's composition--an hour's worth--and that's him playing, multi-tracked guitar and bass."

"Wow! He's really great! All he ever did when he was here at the house was blues rhythm..."

"He just wanted to hear you play."

Maybe not the wrong forum, El Kiko. Back in the 1970s, and again in 1982 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, I went to see Carlos Montoya in performance. As his penultimate piece, Carlos played "St. Louis Blues" flamenco style. It was actually pretty cool. I also have a vinyl album by Carlos Montoya with his flamenco version of "St. Louis Blues" on it.
