norumba2 -> hello -- and returning to flamenco (May 20 2015 17:13:53)

Greetings all! looking forward to participating on this foro...

i joined up a couple of years a go when i had a brief rekindling with flamenco,though that time it didnt stick, and i went in other directions. Feeling the flamenco itch again, -- i think once its in you it never goes away -- so here i am :)

i had an intense relationship with flamenco in the 90s,...my main work was applying free improvisation and free jazz approaches within a pre-Paco De Lucia flamenco vocabulary. Purists did hate me :) Did some cds and tours with that in Europe but have explored other areas for the past 10 or so years. ..mainly going back to electric guitar (fretted and fretless)and oud.

I also did a stint with Indian sarod for a few years too, but my tinnitus and the sympathetic strings ultimately didnt match as i got older. Funny , i can play electric guitar loud all day and it wont bother me as much as those drone strings!

Lately though, I've been inspired to bring back the flamenco element, though I'm without a flamenco guitar for many years as well. I had some nice ones over the years - my favorite sounding was a Conde, but the intonation on it was off and saddle and nut variations didnt bring it in. Looking for something budget to get my flamenco technique back in order and see if my interest sticks, then look into a good instrument later on. Tsiorba's instruments are looking very appealing down the road!

thats my story -- looking forward to relearning from all of you!

norumba2 -> RE: hello -- and returning to flamenco - and whos worth listening to? (May 29 2015 6:23:22)

saying hi again!

since ive been out of the loop for a while, im interested in knowing who are some of the emerging players that folks here like and /or recommend. when i was immersed in flamenco in the late 90s/early 00's, everyone was into Vicente Amigo and Tomatito. Who's come up through the pike in the past 10 or 15 years that are really interesting players and singers?

my taste always gravitated toward early accompanists - Melchor de Marchena, for example. -- but i like to keep current as well, but ive been in a time capsule re flamenco since 2002. please bring me up to speed :)

Antonio Rey, buy his CDs, he is one of the best, if not the best player nowadays. Great compositions, and great sound and technique.

Jesus Mendez is a great Singer.

I'm a big fan of Ramon Jimenez's Sembrando Inquietudes CD
Jesus de Rosario's Sin Tanto CD has some cool stuff too

Each of these guitarists makes a guest appearances on a buleria on the other guy's disks - definitely worth checking out.
