There was a place in LA, called the Purple Onion Interesting that there was a Purple Onion in LA. There was a Purple Onion in San Francisco's North Beach area at the same time. The SF Purple Onion opened in 1952 and was part of the "beat" scene. In the late '50s and into the '60s the SF Purple Onion, along with another SF club called the "Hungry I" became venues for the budding folk scene--The Kingston Trio, The Smothers Brothers (before they went to comedy) and others, as well as Lenny Bruce, Woody Allen, and other stand-up comedians.
