elmanolito -> Song List 4 Commercial Venue (Apr. 25 2015 0:35:44)

Planning to get a job as a solo guitarist at some lounge, restaurant etc.Wanna know from those who used to do this kind of job, what are the good, acceptable songs ( flamenco guitar instrumentals ) to play? Usually there'll be 3 sessions per night, every session will be 45 minutes.I read tabs..If you guys have any good tabs for the job, kindly if possible, share it.So far My current song list for practices are Mi Nino Curro , Camaron (Rondena - Paco de Lucia); El Panuelo, Rio de la Miel, Soniquete, El Plazuela (Bulerias - Paco de Lucia); La Barossa (Alegrias - Paco de Lucia), Tio Sabas (Taranta - Paco de Lucia); La Ardila (Alegrias - Tomatito); A Mi Tio El Nino Miguel, La Chanca, Rincones de Lolés (Bulería - Tomatito). This list of mine, not for showing off, but we know the importance of practice, techniques...it is never never easy.I live in Indonesia. The people here accept flamenco quite well, but mostly they did not being open up by the true flamenco art, songs I mean.I know that the commercial venue need a versatile guitar player, though one has a focus line in music like us, flamenco. I've met some guitarist here who work at some restaurants and lounges, got the idea of their song list, some classical, pop, latin and populars. I need to know what flamenco instrumentals that are acceptable for those already familiar with latin and pop music.Maybe Rondena and Taranta are good, but for Soniquete - I'm not sure, maybe gotta slow it down, but still IMO it will sound agressive their ears.Maybe I can just play it whenever I feel like playing, once in a while.Rio de la Miel, is possible..luckily it is Minor mode, they like the minor mode.La Ardila is for sure Win - they think it is a Mediterranean song.Anyway please tell me your opinion..

Regards,
elmanolito

Show us some video or have us listen to some audio of you playing some of the pieces you cited above, and that will allow us to help you more effectively...

I'm not good enough to play stuff like that in restaurants. I play in car parks. Once, sitting under an olive tree on a summer day in southern France I experienced the rare pleasure of getting through Barrio la Vina without any major balls ups. When I looked up a girl on the far side of the parking lot said "That was one of the most beautiful things I ever heard".

Hey guy; reality is you will largely be background. Play what you like and see, or then play what they like if you can get an idea. It will take a gig or two to figure this out.

When I get through it alive A Mi Padre (Nino Miguel) always goes down well.

I can't help much but your guys's president likes Nepalm Death and Lamb of God so that makes me assume people there can handle a little aggressiveness in their music....

president likes nepalm death and lamb of god thats brilliant -interesting the tonality is often similar - if Indonesian president is a metalhead what is chinas ?

i cant even consider playuing em but what about panaderos or mantilla and classical romanti pieces like tarrega - grandos etc ?

I suck...

I've heared people do 2 or 3 songs over and over for 45 minutes and it seemed like I was the only one who noticed. I think you could get away with more than you think.

Even if you're in any position to pull these off technically, this list sounds extremely ambitious, your fingers will fall off by the end of each set :) The only person I know who would be able to do this is Grisha Goryachev.
I'd look for some stuff that's easier to listen to for the average listener, like guajiras, tangos, sevillanas. You want to impress obviously, but unless you're surrounded by flamenco guitarists, you will easily do that with stuff that's less complex, and you save energy too.

Did you transcribe Rio de la Miel yourself or you found a score? I'd like to know if there are any scores for this one.

The rumba in Paco Pena's Toques Flamenco book is a nice warm up / pause from harder pieces.

Also learn some gipsy king strumming patterns, play around with that and they will call you the best guitarist they ever heared.
( I am serious).....

Whoa! That never, ever happened to me. Where is this magical location where girls suddenly like flamenco?

elmanolito,

In my experience, the simpler the song the more people can relate to it. My three biggest hits so far are: Con garbo y salero (Farruca - Sabicas), Los caireles (Zapateado - Manolo Sanlucar) and Malaguena by Lecuona (Paco's arrangement). Guajira de Lucia can sometimes work. You need some musically simple melodic pieces. Like Zapateado en re by Sabicas. Most audiences I encountered would not understand Tio Sabas (I learned it 15 years ago and only performed once - does it tell you anything?). Been playing Mi nino curro for over 2 decades, yet don't dare performing it - people get bored and lose track. Again, you need some Paco Pena and Sabicas there, maybe early Paco (Mi inspiracion?)...

LOL!! I was bloomin' surprised back then, but even more surprised now!!

Perhaps the old saying is true, it's not what you got but where you put it. Perhaps try switching venue from internationally famous concert halls to parking lots outside French caravan sites Grisha.
