Andy Culpepper -> Rounding fret ends (Apr. 17 2015 23:10:35)
I thought I would post this little tutorial of how I round over my fret ends, to prevent sharp corners from sticking out during dry conditions.
This should be pretty easy to do for even non-luthiers, just remember to protect the top of the guitar when working above the 12th fret.
If your frets are sticking out badly, you'll want to mask the edge of the fingerboard and file perpendicular to the ends to get them back flush to the side of the board first.
Of course the most important thing is to use a well seasoned fingerboard, but the wood may still contract at some point.
Nice tutorial. How do you prevent taking off any of the fretboard edge next to the fret ends?
Thanks. I mentioned in the video but it's not very clear, you can get files with a safe edge that won't mar the fingerboard. Some people put masking tape between the frets too.
