Kevin -> Alegrias Melodies (Apr. 7 2015 4:45:49)

Does anyone know more or less how many alegrias melodies there are; just alegrias, not cantinas, mirabras, etc?

I am transcribing incipits for my students so that they (and I, lol) have models to work with (usually I just go by ear). I am doing it for all forms but right now just alegrias.

I have the tessitura on a version of "Y Que Le llaman relicario" going from A down to E above middle c in the first line.
Another alegrias sung by Perla is from E an octave high resolving to G#.
I am well aware that letras do not always determine the melody, but there are some letras that are sung to certain melodies more often than not.

I am just beginning this and noting the recurring patterns among singers. I have about four different melodies of alegrias so far. I am just curious if anyone has an idea of how many melodies there are?

I am aware of 3 main ones from traditional rep. Couple of modern ones like Camaron recorded or Vicente made up but maybe you don't want those? The colatillas that normally attach to the end I am aware, again, of 3 different ones that can also be used for other cantiñas family songs.

There are also "estribillo" type things I have encountered requested for dance which I am not sure where they come from because I don't hear them in the traditionaly cante performances.

At first glance:

alegria 1
alegria 2+cantiña 1 (partial colatilla)
cantiña 3 (colatilla)
alegria 2+cantiña 1 as before, cut short.
mirabra (or romera? I always confuse) + cantiña 2

she likes to cut the alegria melody short (by not repeating last line) and do a short colatilla (again she doesn't repeat as normal). Also she likes to sing in the half compas sometimes. It's important to note that the first melody she sings is the "pure" alegria with no cantiña addition...a good point of study. Also she doesn't do the 3rd melody of alegria that is the one I like the best honestly.
