hi folks on a rainy day in china for me -- perfect day too work on some rh skills.

i meet a fellow the other day who actually has a flamenco guitar for sale -- its from a luthier named Rafael diaz (Granada) 1991 (me thinks).

in china i must say very few flamenco guitarists here considering population is 1.4 billion.

question is I'm in the market to get a guitar (secretly id like and anders guitar or andys - yet i don't have enough funds and I'm terrified about shipping costs )-

any how i played the rafael diaz guitar it seems good - i had thought about the david pena varagas guitar also as a friend can bring one for me -- yet must pay before playing !!!! asking price for raphael diaz is about 1700 euro - its hard i can't compare with others.

any info on rafael would be great - or any thoughts - i have been to granada and loved is so much it would be very nostalgic to have a guitar from there purchased in china

anyone played rafael diaz guitars ?? i can't find much about him i know about manuel diaz , let me know thanks guys

I don't know anything about Rafael Diaz unfortunately. Perhaps he is a member of the Diaz family from Granada? But you should find out if the guitar is signed by the maker. If not then 1700 euros is probably too much.

Its common practice in Spain to buy in factory-made guitars and then add a label which suggests a luthier-made instrument. With no signature it will be a factory guitar and worth much less.

Can you post some photos of the guitar in question?

Francisco Manuel Díaz (b 1942) is the best known of the Diaz family in Granada. He is a guitarist and luthier (and great talker!) He has an entry in Spanish Wikipedia. When visiting a bunch of flamenco enthusiasts in in Warsaw I was surprised to find that they had a Polish EP of him performing in Poland.

He taught is brother Rafael Diaz and his sons Victor Manuel Díaz Sánchez and Francisco Manuel Díaz Sánchez.

There is plenty of information if you Google their names.

back to raphael diaz ? any takers ?

bule_b -> RE: diaz family and granada school (Feb. 19 2015 15:16:37)

In your first post it sounds like you're thinking of buying it and asking for opinions and then in your last post you're looking for "takers" so sounds like you're trying to sell it??

Guerrilla Marketing 101? Well done ....

And if you're "in the market" and have played the guitar and liked it then why would you care for opinions of foro members who have never touched that particular guitar??? I don't get it.

SephardRick -> RE: diaz family and granada school (Feb. 19 2015 15:38:56)

" I don't get it "

I don't understand what the point of his question is either.

Maybe English isn't minorthing's primary language.

Then, when you google "Diaz" "guitar" "flamenco", what do you get? The Prof! Coincidence?

Reads to me like minothang is just asking if anyone else can share any more info on Raphael Diaz.
I'm not getting anything else from this....he is just after as much background as possible ....maybe prior to making a purchase of said guitar.
Just how I am reading it......totally innocent/legitimate questions.

Best

minorthang--i did a search for a 1991 rafael diaz guitar and rafael diaz luthier and found nothing. i did not find any real information about this luthier. what might help others is for you to post a link to this guitar or maybe photos of the guitar. members may be able to evaluate the guitar by photos or by the listing. the only rafael diaz guitar i could find in my search was a used negra at elderly instruments in michigan, usa which is in the 1.7K euro range ($2200 us dollars). i did find a luthier named rafael mardones diaz but he is from chile south america.

There is a short entry for him in my Guitarrero encyclopedia. It's in spanish and a couple words I don't know, but the jist of it says he was born in 1941, making him the older brother, and set up his own shop in 1972, specialized in Castanettes too, but his love of music forced him to quit and join a musical group as a vocalist. After some years it didn't work out so good so he returned to granada with intent to set up his own shop, but had to work for his famous bro for a few years. Seems he has since bounced back and forth between working for his bro and setting up his own shop. The example of his guitar label they had has this info:
Rafael Diaz/constructor manual de guitarras de flamenco y concierto, Placeta de San Miguel Bajo 3, Granada España.

I never played one.

[:D][:D] All true....I spent many lost afternoons with Francisco and his amazing stories. Francicso works with his son Victor in the Cuesta Gomerez of Granada. I never tried one of Rafaels guitars. To add to Ricardos post I found a little bit more information from the rather poetic "Inventorio de Guitarreros Granainas" pages 129 - 132. This is all the information I could find.

Another clip on a 2003 Rafael Diaz.

This model has a nice tone in my opinion.

Here is another label inside a 1977 Rafael Diaz.

Also, here are a few links to other ones, which have been on the market.
