My old Bausach case is finally broken, however it worked great for many years. I picked it up in Spain. It was the standard case that all the luthiers stocked. But it seems Bausach is out of business now. It was a lightweight hardshell without any added bulk (no domed exterior shell) and consequently had a small form factor which made it convenient when about town.

Looking for a replacement but everything out there is quite heavy and bulky, e.g. Humicase and Hiscox. I'm not travelling on a plane with this case so don't need the latest 10 ply wood heavy-duty construction (which is quite useless anyways).

Anyone have any suggestions on a lightweight cheap "bausach style" case?

What is the defacto cheap guitar case that the luthiers in Spain are using nowadays?

Quite a few companies now manufacture ''hard foam'' type cases.....lightweight moulded foam with an outer ''gig bag'' waterproof material covering it. These are a good option......have straps so you can carry on your back and give good protection. They are of varying quality from brand to brand so I would advise physically checking them out before purchase.

How broken? Is it repairable? I had one of these cases and one of the hinges broke. I took it to a shop where they sell luggage and they fitted new hinges for very little money. Nice case given a new life.

I agree restauration might be good idea, even if the wood is broken, had bausach case and it was lightest I've seen. There are still some bausachs for sale online

Sorry, that´s bulls#it. It suggests to buy a waterproof case, but that´s not true. A waterproof case can be thrown into a sea and no water gets into the case. The water enters through the zipper and the connection textiles on the opposite at side its back. If you want a waterproof case, then you need a carbon version incl. rubber lips and a special isolation at all latches and fastening connections. This is provided by e. g. by Accord and Calrton and starts at about 1.200 €.

........... furthermore you can use these cases for full diving expeditions for the whole family including ''splat'' the dog and ''chug'' the bull...their combined internal air content will ensure the case will stay afloat when you really need it to. However ,don't trust the zips,they aren't made like the ''ring'' of an ar sehole so will probably allow moisture seepage (both ways) .....but hey bullsh#t has an uncanny habit of spilling in all directions at the most unlikely of times. For example, I love to make purely innocent suggestions regarding a cheap ,lightweight replacement case to a fellow member and also have the audacity to say a material is waterproof......wow I really am a total tosser, a beater of the old purple bishop an absolute pile of festering ,spent ji z.......OK the material probably isn't waterproof in the way ''mr be fekkin accurate'' has suggested.....oh sorry ''bernd'' .......but I still feel its a good option for a cheap, lightweight errrrr shower proof (light precipitation) case to pop your guitar in.....I urinated over my one yesterday when I was changing my colostomy bag and it kept the p iss off my wood and strings too......didn't help with the smell but gladly that one is disguised by the strong smell of bullsh#t.

Thanks for the recos. I'll check them out.

The Guitar Centre near me does not keep in stock classical guitar cases, so I am stuck with online ordering.
The issue with online is that very few manufacturers list the weight of their cases.

So far I only found Humicase which shows a weight of 10 pounds for the case. Its a nice case but heavy.

Hiscox is famous but the one I checked out is bulky and the padding inside is very poor. So it might be a nice case to stand on but the key, for me, is shock absorption and transference.

I used to have an old Travelite TL-60 (amazing case) tried to see if they are still available but it seems not.

I have no idea who can repair an old case and usually this kind of repairs cost more than buying a new case. I live in the centre of the throw-it-away culture.

I think in the end I'll just pick up the cheapest 3 ply case I can find, usually $39 online. Should be lighter and will do the job.

Interesting that finding a reasonable price case of under 6 pounds weight is so difficult??!

I see, you have totally misunderstood the system of Hiscox cases. The padding isn´t poor, but it optically seems to be poor. Hiscox´padding system transfers side impacts to the most stabile part of the guitar. Additional paddings are available to bringe the guitar into a perfect position inside of the case. Hiscox in general provides one of the best shock absorbance. But indeed, Hiscox cases are anything else than a beauty.

Oh really? How interesting.
Are they using some kind of impact absorption foam?

From just looking and touching it the padding felt very thin and insufficient, but if its an impact foam then it doesn't have to be thick.

It´s the complete construction. When I startet my project Noble Cases I checked the Hiscox Pro case. There were also some detailed info by Hiscox available at that time (2005/6). The most stabile part of the guitar are the upper and lower bouts. At this part the guitar is held in position by the pads. It´s important to use the correct pads for the individual guitar. The shape of the case is calculated to keep the possibilitiy of an accidental impact directly onto the bouts very low. But if this will happen, the combination of the foam and hardcover produce a tension on its material that spreads the impact energy on a wider aria. That´s the reason why there are sometimes damaged Hiscox cases with cracks on the sides; the case left its life to keep the guitar alive and undamaged. So the Hiscox case for sure is really not a bad investment.

Hiscox provides some invisible quality details e. g. in the mounting of the latches, handle etc. Compared to an optical likely appearing 40 $ box, these are some important facts in safty you pay when buying a Hiscox, although it´s ugly.

Hi, VGV Vittorini makes superb cases that are very lightweight but sturdy. I own one and I am very pleased. It is an Italian company but I bought it in the UK.

VGV Vittorini case provide the worst handle construction. The handle is much too near to the frame. If you have a powerful hand with thick fingers, the outside part of your fingers will touch the frame; that feels very bad. The material of the handle is made of synthetical caoutchouc. After a certain smal period of use, the handle will break. VGV does not provide substitute handles. During the years on all guitar festivals I met guitarists who bound a tightrope the handle fasteners on their VGN cases.

There were versions of the VGN case available that doesn´t provide interiou paddings. That´s a risk for the guitar. I don´t know if these cases were discontinued or still are being offered.

Most definately
the hiscox lite flight case is working well for me and has survived many a baggage handler

Two good and lightweight and inexpensive cases that I use a lot are the Carrion C-1502 case for dobro or classical guitar, which costs about $60 US, and the Gator GWE-Classic classical guitar case for about $80. The Gator case has an arched top--but on the other hand, the back is not arched.

I like these cases - much easier to carry around than my Hiscox. I have two VGVs. The standard model was rebadged by Alhambra and supplied free with some of their guitars. I don't know if they continued to do this. I also have a deluxe model (bought second-hand) with a different handle.

They are comparatively light and I have had no problems with the handles - but I have had three broken handles on other cases over the years. It is always wise to heed the warnings.

My standard model has an extended interior compartment that will take a guitar footstool. This makes it unsuitable for pegheads. My deluxe case has a standard interior and works fine with pegheads. They are not cheap cases.
