I am listening to his stunning Alegrias to celebrate his honour. Amigo would be nothing without him.

I think Vicente owes more to his own vision than to anyone else. I can't find many similarities between his style and Sanlucar's. When they played togheter, Vicente already sounded like Vicente, even with that other guitar (not a Reyes). Just my opinion.

I agree. Vicentes style has nothing from Manolo Sanlúcar. He is very individual on his own style.

During the younger times I would say Serranito was similar to Manolo Sanlúcar.

We all stand on the shoulders of giants. Vicente served a ten year apprentiship under Manolo, and I can certainly see some 'DNA' even if you can not. Are you saying he learned nothing from his "Maestro Sanlúcar"? I will certainly concur that he has a well developed and unique style, but owes much to his apprentiship (and also his initial studies with El Tomate and Merengue de Córdoba).

Perhaps I should rephrase my initial post to "Vicente owes much to Manolo", as "would be nothing" seems a little strong on reflection.

Yes.

I heard he skipped those classes to stay at home and play guitar.

Hmm, I feel Manolo and Vicente are quite similar in many aspects. My music theory is bit short to describe exactly what ways they are similar, but they really are in many ways to me. More I listen to Manolo, more I go "ah, that's where Vicente came from..."

And of course, he deserves every award he gets. Such a wonderful musician.
