Joana -> Hygrometer (for humidity and temperature) (Jan. 31 2015 19:27:23)

Greetings!

If you keep a hygrometer in your guitar case, can you
recommend a brand that you trust?

I just purchased a Planet Waves hygrometer and I am not trusting the
values..

Lots of temperature changes here, we have a lovely collection
of snowflakes from the blizzard with another 1-2 feet of snow on the way.

My indoor hydrometer is running about 34-35 today.

Any suggestions are very appreciated!

i find the analog hygrometers for humidors to be reliable. they can be adjusted which is a plus. you can calibrate hygrometers using moist salt in a zip lock bag (instructions can be found on the internet). one can find hygrometers at e-bay

Thanks so much Keith!
I found an analog one online and the calibration instructions.

More snow coming on Monday ( another foot or more ) for Taxachusetts...this
will yield more practice time for guitar lessons. [sm=Smiley Guitar.gif]
I have never seen such a severe winter here as this season.

I use a Caliber 4R hygrometer for a cigar humidor. It is very accurate and keep my cigars and guitars in check.

Any digital one is reliable after calibrating it with salt test. I've heard the analog ones can't take knocks and drops

Which digital ones can be calibrated?

all , you just do the salt test and mark +- the percentage that it is inaccurate with a pencil for example

Meade Instruments makes a great wireless Thermo-Hygrometer, around $30.00, with sending unit, indoor or outdoor.
Got it today and it working great, I live in Thailand and figured it would be worth having one inside the room where I do my guitar study, and playing.
Right now it is reading 83.8 degrees F, and showing 55 % humidity, well worth the wellbeing of my mind and guitars.

I have this one, seems to work pretty well:

So far humidity in the case has been between 45 and 65 %

A friend of mine who is a licensed Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning tech gave me one of these (tinyurl is slowing down, but it works eventually):

My friend said it was an industry standard. The el cheapo digital ones I have had have varied +/-10% or so from the fancy one, even after being calibrated to it. I haven't tried any of the higher quality digital ones.

Won't fit in a guitar case but this is the one I use in my shop: https://www.lmii.com/products/tools-services/measuring-tools/hygrometer

The fancy ones can drift a bit too, one of these days I want to recalibrate mine with a sling psychrometer.

You can also make a hygrometer by gluing up two strips of Spruce, one cross-grain, at 50% humidity and gauging how far it bends to either side. But now we're getting a little off the topic of case humidifiers [8D]

I have this case and it has a built in analog hygrometer:
WolfPak Case

I'm not sure how accurate it is but for the most part, it has the same reading as my digital one and it has kept my precious Culpepper guitar safe so far.

This is the digital one I have. I do remember testing it and it was accurate. https://www.stringsbymail.com/humicase-mini-digital-hygro-thermometer-4957.html

It's small and fits in a case. It kind of goes through batteries pretty quickly though...
