Resawing boards (Full Version)

A Friend gave these two padouk boards to me for guitar making.
The boards are 19mm thick. Should I take the easy way and make one Set out of each board, ore the risky way and try to make two Sets out of each board?
What do you think?

I would go for two sets! First, I would reduce the boards so that I would not have so much height when resawing.

19mm seems plenty thick for resawing but it depends on how flat the boards are and how accurate and sharp your resaw is.

Resawing 200-240mm is no Problem with my bandsaw.
For such kind of jobs I use always a new or newly sharpened blade.
The boards are relatively straight.
Wayne, two sets per board ore in total?

I don't understand your statement. He said the boards are about 19mm thick (roughly 3/4"). Assuming the bandsaw takes a 2-3mm kerf he can easily saw it into two pieces but resawing this into 4 pieces would be virtually impossible unless you like your backs to be extremely thin.

I got a stock of Zebrano a while back - it was the first time I had tried to re-saw boards on my 14" bandsaw. I bought a blade called as ripper(!!!) it's about 4 teeth per inch but has a really fine kerf - I managed to cut 4mm thick boards without much trouble (give or take a bit or wander (0.5 mm or so)).

After a few boards the blade was pretty blunt so I had to attack it with a file to restore a cutting edge.

Wish we all had friends with a stash of Padauk!

...have you got any sides?

the language of the engineer is the drawing.
Above all if the language is not well spoken!

In the principle I know what is to be done, however, to hear an other opinion is very nicely.

I think i will make the two Set version! (One Set from a Board)
It is better to have two Sets and a lot of Padouk dust than nothing!

If the original planks are book matched - you could go for three?? You have plenty of length for ribs and if you aim for a cut of about 5mm you should be ok. Probably enough for a couple of sets for a uke or mandoline even on top. Get a steady support on the saw - I always take my heart in my mouth doing this 8-)
