A provocative article appearing in an online magazine. I'm not sure how to gauge the accuracy so I thought it might be a good topic to discuss with those who have been eyewitness to what is described in this article. The politicians seem to be trying to clamp down on noise and street gatherings, but this is always the case anyway, but now economic hardships are forcing penas out of spaces they rent.
These actions are always in the air, how many times over the years did you hear rumors that spaces like the Carboneria in Sevilla will shut down because the people who live in a three block radius don't like the street to be treated like Disneyland for drinking by tourists?
Historically politicians and police have always been shutting down flamenco gatherings, and I have heard that during the Franco years flamenco and other late night establishments were not allowed in the city limits. Flamenco often happened in ventas outside the city, or it was kept discreet in a bar far enough out of police earshot, like in a private home.
What is different about todays issues? The population of upper middle class and wealthy inner city residents have influence over politics or are the politicians and police trying to exert more control over inner city street gatherings? Are bar and club owners reacting and pressuring police to shut down street drinking?
