Hi

I´m having a lot of problems with my internet connection lately. And I´m trying to prepare myself a little bit before I contact the company this time. I would like to know where the problem is. On my side of the router or on the "outside" of the router. If you know what I mean.
The problem is that my software is all in Spanish and its not so easy to translate. But here we go:

I have 2 pc. one with wifi and one with cable and when the net is down, all 3 are down. I have wifi net and no internet.

When I in win7 run the little program that tries to fix problems, its says that: DNS server is not found.
When I in dos promt "cmd" write ipconfig/release, I get a message a lot of things, but the most important is something like this:
no operation in local area connection can be done while the media state es disconnected.

Org: No se puede realizar ninguna operación en Conexión de área local mientras los medios estén desconectados.

The same happens when I afterwards write "ipconfig/renew

And when I restart computer and router, nothing changes. Same old story.

Does any of this give anyone a hint of where the problem is. Its getting very annoying.

It indicates that the router is not issuing an IP address to the wired computer when you try to renew your IP address with ipconfig renew. This may be because the ISP connection is down and it cannot find the DNS server, as it needs a connection to do this or the router is faulty.

I suspect it is either a faulty router, the ISP connection or your phone line. Call the provider and they can run some checks or will know if there has been a recent service disruption.

I´m not on a phoneline. They have some kind of antena that sends from a high point and I have another antena that receives.

The problem is that i dont trust these guys 1 second. they just want me to pay for a serviceman to come and tell me that my router is faulty an I have to buy a new one + pay him. This is the way things are here. Even though the router is in garanty, they will try to tell me its not etc etc.
I just hate these types and i always en up with the feeling that I would like to bash the guy with a tennis racket. [&:]

This with the DNS adress is new. Before when the internet was down and when i ran the little problem solution program, it was telling me, with a little drawing as well, that no signal was entering the router.

Sounds like the same line-of-sight Wi-Max I had in my house, a horrible service. Took me many months to cancel, after I left Spain.

Difficult to diagnose. Your signal might be reaching their tower but their data centre has been down.

Wi-Max is very prone to weather interference - has it been stormy between you and their antenna recently?

Also check that your antenna has clear sight of their tower. No trees or new obstructions.

yes , it does sound like your connection is down ,, occasionally i get a similar thing when it is a real busy time ....contension ratio.....it gets so busy , at tea time that sometimes i cant get on .. i wait have a coffe and then get on later ...

the contention ratio , is how many people your provider allows to use 1 line ...(or the ratio of the potential maximum demand to the actual bandwidth.)

like 50 : 1 ... if that is your ratio , then technically the bandwidth is divided in to 50...and you are number 51 trying to get on . you will have no connection and get the messages you mentioned ..

thing is some people are just using e mail ... light use ... and others are gaming .. heavy usage ...

is there any particular time of the day when it happens more , or any time when it is ok ?

I would say it is your ISP ( internet service provider ) that is allowing a traffic jam and you cant get on.....

solution .
1.. they should be able to monitor this and change you to a different line if poss ...
2..change ISP s ...

I think its difficult to diagnose this accurately. but if you have a "Not connected" type of error on your pc's network connection, then the error would be either the PC, the cable or the router. as its affecting more than one pc its likely to be the router. I cant see any way this can be caused by your connection to your isp.

as Escibano says it may be that its not issuing IP addresses, (most routers have built in DHCP servers, and its this that issues the ip address to the client PC's, no connection to your isp is necessary).

first thing I would try (of course after restarting everything... twice), do hard reset on the router - you will lose any configuration information, you can usually save existing configuration settings from the routers homepage, alternatively make a note of any specific settings before you reset it.
maybe the config settings are hard coded and wont get wiped, or maybe the settings are on your isp's website, or maybe (more and more common) there are no specific settings at all!

Really? A router can issue DHCP addresses without an internet connection, of course but my diagnosis is more based on the comment "DNS server is not found" which could indicate a problem with the connection to the ISP. As it is intermittent, my money is on the weakest link, the WiMax (or whatever they are using).

He is renewing his IP address on a wired PC which is probably checking for the DNS server... ipconfig/all will report the DNS server, as fly suggest above. Don't know whether he is on an automatic or a hard-coded DNS address. The wi-fi clients don't care as they already have an address but are falling to access the Internet at the same time.

Next time it fails, I would advise Anders to log in to his router admin page from a browser (default is usually http://192.168.0.1) which should have a connection status option somewhere to check the wireless link (look for PPPoA status, or more likely PPPoE for a radio network).

If he can't connect to the router at all, then he has a LAN or router problem but I would also try the same on the Wi-Fi devices to make sure it is not isolated to the wired PC.

I should add that "media disconnected" can come from a 'ghost' adapter that doesn't exist anymore and is not the active interface. Would be better if Anders could post a screenshot of ipconfig/all.

I was basing mine on, the disconnected media error message . ;)
Which means no connection to router. unless there is some specific reason not to, the the DNS server will be set by the dhcp server to itself, and DNS requests will be forwarded on to the ISp DNS. This is normally confirmed by doing an ipconfig /all the DNS in most cases will be the dhcp server (the router). So when the client reports it cannot find dns, it means it can't find the router ;)
Even if the ISP connection is down, you would still get an IP address, this can be confirmed by doing the ipconfig /all command and seeing if the IP address is valid, if it says something along the lines of autoconfigured after the IP address it's not valid.


Of course all this is pure speculation. It could be any number of things. But I'd bet on the router :)

yeh tell me about it :), I've got 10 adapters on my pc!, all but 2 are virtual. most installed by hyper-v or vm ware. our server has even more, not just from virtualization, but also many antivirus softwares install their own too, to intercept network traffic for scanning.
and of course when you uninstall any of the these softwares, they leave all their cr@p behind.

of course a screen shot from Anders pc when the network is down would help, but if its the router he obviously wont be able to get to the router home page... unless he sets up static ip addresses.........

Thanks for your replys. I get a bit of overdose by reading them. I only learn IT things when I have to. So i will read again, when the grey cells have calmed down.

I will try the config/all next time and i will try to find the information to be able to use the 192.168.0.1 adress. I cant find my password
I have saved your info to a text file, so that I can find it next time things go down

The ISP is called Fankinet [:D].. I dont know which kind of connection they use. Its pretty fast when it worksand its 30% the price of phoneline providers. Thats why I use it. A phoneline connection is some 50,-€ a month everything incl. which I find to be a lot of Spanish Euros. (remember, they have a different relative value to other euros)

Its autumn, so it has been raining a good deal lately, but no storms. Very few storms in Huelva. The electricity has a tendency to go down often when it rains, and then, of course, no internet, but my DNS problem doesnt seem to have anything to do with that.

And Simon, canceling things like this in Spain, means stopping their acces to your bankaccount and then say mañana every day for a while. Then it normally cancels itself. Spain has its advantages.

I am sure, but my the bank didn't cancel the payments. I was in the UK and they kept writing to my Spanish address for confirmation [:@] Wouldn't act on phone calls, faxes or letter. You know how they are.

ohh, thats a bad story. Banks.... woahh, they can be annoying. One of my banks still charge me 40 € a year for Sole´s credit card even though she died 2 years ago. They keep saying they need some kind of paper to cancel it. I mean how low can you get in order to earn some dirty money.
