El Kiko -> What can you do ? (Nov. 6 2014 19:52:32)

A few days ago there was an international food festival near me , food, drink and music from a whole wealth of world countries
Its an interesting time, with a positively babels tower of languages .. . from the far east to Africa and a lot of Europe etc ..
I also did my bit, A time of fun flamenco , carefully chosen not to get to serious .,or annoy people too much , keep it light you know,

A few Sevillanas , a bit of rumba , a fairly dramatic Bulerias (many a falseta stolen from John Hadad there, quite pleased with it actually) and a Solea played a little fastish to keep it turning over .

Well , as good as i could do . not too bad ..if i do say so myself

Afterward , I was talking to some of the other musicians about their instruments and things when a group of people approached , I think I recognized one of the guys from somewhere , but anyway..

'' Wow , '' this guy said ' '' your really good at playing the guitar ... and that music you
played sounded kind of Spanishy''

Thanks ........

''yeah . like, you should learn to play spanish guitar , you'd be really good it ''

Spanish guitar eh ?.. , well I might know a bit of that...

'' Great ...so , like , can you play BAMBOLERO ?

Paul Magnussen -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 6 2014 20:10:17)

Better get used to it. Back in the ’60s I learnt Classical Gas because I finally got fed up with having to say I didn’t know it.

jmb -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 6 2014 20:33:18)

Kiko, be sure, that people are who should learn something about Spanish music.

You know what flamenco compas of solea means.. and this people ask you for a song of French rumberos as experts !!... People are crazy!

That does not just occur with "know-nothings" off the street, El Kiko. A few years ago the Gypsy Kings performed at Wolf Trap, a music venue in a Virginia suberb of Washington, DC. I kid you not, the advertisement for their performance stated that they would be playing "fiery flamenco numbers like Bamboleo."

World is full of idiots[:)]

El Kiko -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 6 2014 22:44:38)

as it happens I'm gonna have a break from playing for a while ..
which I really feel like ...I will be in Portugal for while to see some family and stuff ...

I dont think I will have time to be in Spain , though if i go south i may get to Huelva for a quick fandango..( or bamboleo if i want to be really Spanish ) ...
but for the main part i will be in the north .

sometimes things are dissapointing .. and you have to recharge your batteries...
and re- evaluate ...
As Homer Simpson says '' if somethings difficult . its probably not worth doing ''

maybe i see you guys in a few weeks ....i have to ''volare''...' a mi manera ' ...[:'(][:'(]

britguy -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 7 2014 12:45:14)

Not sure what "bambolero" is; but I've had a few requests to play some 'flamingo'.
(Not the pink plastic ones. . . . . )

El Kiko -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 7 2014 13:44:06)

Just one example of that day...you also have this.....

Q.. name one flamenco dancer/ singer/ or guitar player
A.. errm

And...
Q..have you ever heard of Paco de Lucia?
A...Paco is a Spanish name isnt it?

No, im afraid outside of here, or your little group of freinds flamenco, "spanish music " is very little known about

Tbhe best you can get is, ssome tjay went o holiday..
... we saw dancing in sevilla...we know what t hat was

,,,i like the fast ones.(bulerias)
...the guy was wailing; singing and it sounded arabic...(poss solear)

Flamenco is Anfslucian folk music..a lot less of it escapes than what you tbhink

Sorry for mistakes..typing from my phone ...

jmb -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 7 2014 14:22:35)

Even, here in Spain, is very common people that do no distinguish between Copla and Flamenco, or people thinking that they like flamenco when they only like rumbas. And there are sites where attendance to flamenco concerts is posh and polite, but if you say that you play flamenco they see you as an odd person.

But actual disconcerting questions or sentences of this kind came from people that play music.

It should be the Flamenco nature that was born between outcasting people ... [:)][:)][:D]

Are you all sure that you're pretty well informed in every aspect of life that you have commented on to this day?

...then why the nasty attitude?

[:D]

my thoughts exactly....

tele -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 7 2014 16:11:15)

What does it matter what other people think about the type of music you play?
Flamenco is very unpopular (and quite unpopular even in andalucia) , it's only natural people don't know much about it. Maybe it's good that it's not popular, it can maintain the purity , otherwise after some time most flamenco could become commercial and stuff like solea on electric guitar might emerge[&:] It might even diminish the amount of true aficionados after many years.
I like that it's still undiscovered by the masses, why care about ignorant comments for example?
And if people call for example french rumba flamenco then so be it, I think they call everything flamenco that has spanish guitar with some phrygian sounds in it.

Not sure what "bambolero" is;

It’s actually Bamboléo, a big hit for the Gipsy Kings in 1987; and yes, there’s an accent on the e — possibly to stop the French from mispronouncing it, since no other reason seems apparent.

And yes, it’s a rumba.

El Kiko -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 7 2014 17:44:22)

i agree with your thoughts tele ..
and for the others theres no nasty attitude ... none at all .
on the contrary I think its funny ...it makes me smile .. not the same for you ? ah well .....

it also makes me realize how great this site is .. due to the age of tech that we live in now ...
here am I ... alone ,... and yet surrounded by friends , who live nowhere near me , and who i will never meet ...and yet still friends , joined by a like-minded common thread of a certain , small , and misunderstood at times ,, genre of music ...

I think its great , .. and if one day i meet someone else that likes it or knows anything about it ... then yess

until then ... i am happy to be here ...

(edit , yes of course its BAMBOLEO , i dint know why i have an R in it , i didnt notice, maybe cos its next to the E on the keyboard .. sorry anyway ..)

Bamboleo bambolea

I do find it amusing but I don't really think that people are idiots only because they aren't passionate about the subject.

Sr. Martins -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 7 2014 20:06:00)

We judge based on ourselves. What should we do then?

Don't judge.

Many people still think Portugal is a region of Spain, it hasn't killed me yet and I know that people wouldn't say that if they knew better. Iam sure most of us also have gross geographical misconceptions but we just don't care because it's "not relevant to us" so.... why should it be to other people?

El Kiko -> RE: What can you do ? (Nov. 7 2014 20:13:41)

they might have been badly using the word instead of Hispanic , specific application to Spanish-speaking parts of the New World from 1889,...
meaning that you (possibly ) are descended from Spanish of the Iberian Peninsula

but maybe not ....

Lots of people in this world get a huge blanket term that mostly does not apply ...like people from the far east being refereed to as Chinese ... including those from japan and Korea etc ...

how ever I do see your point ....

@ Rui ...sorry , i just assumed you referred to me as you replied to my post ....

pois , no sábado estarei em Lisboa .. apenas por um curto tempo, então, pegar o trem de estacao do orient por Coimbra

In the United States over the past 30 years "identity" politics has taken over everything from university dorms set aside for certain ethnic groups to election campaigns catering to varous groups on the basis of their ethnic identity. One of the more amusing debates has taken place among the various Spanish-speaking communities over what to call themselves: "Hispanic" or "Latino." The debate usually revolves around ethnic pride and emphasis on the indigenous elements of their identity (i.e. the Indian component of their identity, particularly among ethnic Mexicans and Central Americans, but others as well).

They find themselves in a linguistic bind because neither "Hispanic" nor "Latino" has any application to the indigenous ethnic pride they are attempting to encompass with a catchall term. The term "Hispanic" refers to origins in Spain and has no relevance if one is attempting to emphasize indigenous "New World" roots. The term "Latino" has nothing to do with either the New Word or Spain; it harks back to the language of Rome, which is even less relevant to their goal than the term "Hispanic." Of the two, "Hispanic" is useful if one is emphasizing one's roots in Spain. But neither is really appropriate to the issue they are trying to resolve, although one finds both terms used among groups who think it does.

Far better (and certainly more accurate) if various Spanish-speaking groups were to refer to themselves by their nationalities, e.g., Mexican, Cuban, Chilean, Honduran, etc. The Spanish-speaking world, with it's New World indigenous elements, is too large and diverse to be accurately summed up in one all-encompassing, catchall term.

Bill

I wish people would make up their minds: do we allow discrimination on the grounds of race (or “ethnicity”), or don’t we?

No one should be allowed to have it both ways, i.e. we can discriminate but you can’t.
